The purpose of this research is to provide fundamental materials for the teaching of the concepts of the moon. To accomplish this purpose, The scope of this research includes the student's level of concept building, the background of the students' concept building as well as the students' opinions on the learning contents and the learning methods. On the basis of the above mentioned, a performance test tool was developed. The following are the results of this research on 180 students from 4th to 6th graders, in an elementary school in Daegu City by the performance test tool. First, the rate of the students who have built concept about the moon proved to be 45.5%. There was no distinction in gender in understanding the concept of the moon. However, according to my study, the 6th graders showed the lowest level of understanding the concept of the moon, and the level of the 4th graders, whose test results are higher than the average score, was the highest. Second, the students proved to have various misconceptions about the moon. Results show that gender and grade level caused difference in the level of understanding the concept of the moon. The students were confused in matching the shape of the moon and the name of the moon. Especially, they had difficulty in distinguishing the waxing moon from the waning moon, and the young moon from the old moon. Most students had misconceptions about the direction of the movement of the moon in a day and the change in location over several days. The students also did not understand the process of how the moon changes its phases according to its position from the new moon. Regarding the cycle of the moon's phases, most students misunderstood it as 15 days. Third, most students answered that they learned the concept of the moon in class. Next to, students answered reading. The background of the students' concept building about the moon show that grade level and the accomplishment rate of learning (or test scores) in school caused not to be difference. However, gender was factor differentiating the students' level of concept building about the moon. Fourth, regarding the learning contents, the students answered that they were most interested in 'the change of the phases of the moon'. Grade level and gender proved to be factors differentiating about it. And the students answered that 'the observation activity of the change of the phases of the moon' was the most difficult learning process. And the students wanted to study farther about 'the name of the phases of the moon'. Grade level was the only factor differentiating the answers about the two above mentioned cases subjects. The students preferred direct observation to learn about the moon. Reading, taking lessons at school and searching the Internet followed. The above mentioned results of my research suggest that systematic observation in learning activities at school will be very effective to help the students' concept building about phases of the moon. Regarding choosing the contents to be learned and the proper learning route, gender and grade level should be considered.
