In this thesis, a new technique for animating explosions in real-time is conceived. A simplified model of explosion, rather than a physical one, is used so as to satisfy both the real-time property and the high visual effect simultaneously. Initially, explosive materials are placed in 3-D space which is divided into cubic grid cells. Once an explosion starts, the process of explosion is progressed in chain reaction. The chain reaction process of explosive materials is represented in the form of energy generation and energy transfer between cells by using a cellular automaton. In each frame, the energy level of each cell is updated, and the colors of cells are determined by its energy level. Once the simulation has been done, the cell space is rendered by sampling colors of cells using 2-D textures. The results of applying the proposed method have shown that various-shaped animations of explosions can be realized in real time, with a reasonable 3-D realism.
