Prior researchers on hedonic consumption have emphasized the importance of hedonism in modern consumer behavior. Indeed more consumers today are spending large amount of their resources in pursuit of pleasure and the cultural industry (e.g. entertainment and animation) is growing faster with greater social impact. In this paper, I reviewed previous debates on hedonic consumption and proposed a segmentation framework. Consumers in cultural goods market do not have the same tastes nor preferences, therefore to divide consumers according to appropriate criterion is important for customer orientation. Moreover these differences in hedonism consist of not only individual preferences but also social environments (e.g. sub-cultures and ethnic groups). Therefore localized study of cultural goods would be helpful for decision makers in the Korean cultural goods market. Cultural goods are classified due to their characteristics; costs and the degree of familiarity. Going to the movies is considered familiar and easy to access with no mental or economic barrier. An opera however is defined as a high-culture product requiring knowledge to understand. Opera is not relevant to the majority of consumers. Cultural goods are divided into two categories and consumers in the cultural goods market are divided into four segments according to their attending or purchasing behavior. Consumers who consume relatively more high-culture products than other types are defined as ‘high-Cultured’ and this segment has elastic demand for high-culture goods with respect to the price. Consumers who mainly consume popular products are defined as ‘popularists’. They have high knowledge of popular goods and rely strongly on the word of mouth of reference group. Those who enjoy all types of cultural goods are defined as ‘all-rounders’. They are more likely to switch their choices between types of cultural goods. The last segment is ‘lights’ which indicates low consumption of all types of cultural goods. Data collected from one hundred seventy consumers supported the hypothesis partially or entirely for the segmentation scheme with significantly different statistics. Consumers in the four segments demonstrated different characteristics in choosing cultural goods. They also rely on different information sources and view product attributes differently.
