본 연구에서 사용되어진 탄소계열은 mesophase pitch based carbon fiber (MPCF), meso carbon micro beads (MCMB), Kawasaki mesophase fine carbon (KMFC)이다. Chronopotentiometry(CP)를 이용해 전극들의 충/방전 특성을 조사하였다.

Lithium forms well-defined intermetallic phase with a wide variety of metals, e.g. Al, Sn, Si, Pb, Bi, etc. when those metals are polarized to a sufficiently negative potential in organic electrolyte solution containing Li+. As they offer higher theoretical specific charges and charge densities than the commonly used carbon anode materials, Li_(x)M alloy systems have received special attention. Especially, Li_(x)Sn type alloy has attracted attention since it could outperform not only the carbonaceous electrode but even the lithium metal if considering practical charge densities and specific charges. Despite these appreciable advantages, the Li_(x)Sn alloy system suffers from cracking and crumbling (pulverization) due to the volume expansion during alloying reaction. This study is directed to overcome the disadvantage of SnO₂ anode materials by using active or inactive matrix materials. We studied buffering effect against volume expansion of LixSn alloy during charging process by mixing carbonaceous active material with SnO₂. The carbonaceous materials used in this work were mesophase pitch based carbon fiber (MPCF), mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) and Kawasaki mesophase fine carbon (KMFC). We examined the surface morphology of SnO₂/carbon electrodes using SEM and observed that the amorphous KMFC particles are more homogeneously mixed with SnO₂ particles than other carbons. The charge/discharge performance of the electrode were tested by using Chronopotentiometry(CP). Irreversible SEI formation reactions were observed on the potential range of 2.0 V ~ 1.5 V. It is observed by CV and Impedance Spectroscopy that the SEI film of SnO₂/KMFC electrode was more ionic conductive than films of other electrodes. Chronopotentiogram for SnO₂ reduction reaction shows two potential plateaus. One shown around 0.8 V indicates an irreversible reduction reaction, and the other shown below 0.5 V indicates a reversible reaction. The experimental results indicate that SnO₂ reduction steps can be divided into two steps: Li₂O and Sn metal are produced irreversibly at the first step and Li_(x)Sn alloy reversible reaction are followed at the next step. The later step causes cracking and/or pulverizing by serious volume change. SnO₂ particles were dispersed efficiently on carbon surface, which could prevent aggregation of Sn particles. As a result of it, the volume change would be small. The more efficiently dispersed is SnO₂/carbon system, the more improved are the charge/discharge cycle performance and the lithium storage capacity. Among carbonaceous materials we studied, SnO₂/KMFC system showed the most excellent results in charge/discharge capacity and cycle performances. We observed the effects of inactive composite oxides on the cyclic performance and charge/discharge capacity of SnO2 material. SnO₂, SnO₂/NiO and SnO₂/Co₃O₄ anode materials are prepared from SnCl₂ and M(II)Cl₂(M=Ni or Co) solutions by sol-gel method. Comparing particle morphology by using SEM and electrochemical performance by CP, the roles of inactive matrix can be summarized into two; prevent the Sn particles from aggregating when Li₂O and Sn are produced about 0.8 V, and buffer the volume change during Li_(x)Sn alloy /dealloy reaction. From the results of CP test, we conclude that charge/discharge capacity of SnO₂ material prepared by sol-gel method is higher than commercially available one owing to the small particle size. As charge/discharge cycles are repeated, however, cracking is observed only on the pure SnO2 electrode. In the cases of SnO₂/NiO and SnO₂/Co₃O₄ anode materials, no cracking or pulverization is observed. Especially, SnO₂/Co₃O₄ anode shows the most excellent cycle and capacity performance on the CP data, and we observed SnO₂/Co₃O₄ composite material has small and homogeneous particle distributions from SEM image. Therefore, we concluded that the best cyclic performance of the SnO₂/Co₃O₄ system results from the most excellent size effect and buffering matrix effect against volume change.
