It is no doubt that in Korean history, Buddhism was the source of spiritual power. This is not because Buddhist towers or statues are found in temples. Rather, it is because people continued to follow right teachings of Buddhism and live their life based on them from generation to generation. By reviewing buddhist monk portraits, we can know how priests leading the historical development of Buddhism looked and how they were illustrated. The portraits illustrates the appearance of priests with high virtue. They are not only just portraits, but also Buddhist paintings that are used to worship religious sect founders. Thus the purpose of this study is to investigate stylistic features of existing Buddhist monk portraits, especially focusing on such works made in the late period of Chosun. From the introduction of Buddhism, Buddhist monk portraits began to be painted. They were made in large quantity for religious service, irrespective of Buddhist sect. The portraits were highest in fashion in the period of Koryo after the Zen Buddhism was introduced. The stylistic features as mentioned above were investigated here in accordance with 1st and 2nd half parts of the late Chosun period. In the 1st half part(from the mid 17th to the late 18th centuries), buddhist monk portraits showed many changes in using lines and colors, while maintaining the posture of sitting at chair like before. Elegant but realistic illustrations with thin colors were gradually disappeared and, instead, idealistic, fixed illustrations of buddhist monks became prevalent. Around the late 18th century, a new posture like in Haesongdang Portrait was emerged. In the 2nd half part(from the early 19th to the 20th centuries), the posture of sitting with legs crossed, found in Doowon Portrait and Yeonghandang Portrait, were newly employed unlike the previous half part when conventional postures were invariably used. In the 2nd half part, Buddhist monk portraits were made not idealistically, but uniquely and voluminously. In addition, some restorative pictures like Gakjinguksa Portrait and some portraits illustrating priests as worldly persons were also made. Around the late 19th century, Buddhist monk portraits were seriously degraded in composition, style and color. They seemed to be made with no certain style and considered objects to be memoried rather than those to be worshiped. In conclusion, Buddhist monk portraits of this nation are partially different in style with ordinary portrait and Buddhist painting. This suggests that further considerations should be made about characteristics of Buddhist monk portraits.
