한국 과학자 사회의 성차별 양상과 기제에 대한 탐색적 연구 (An) Exploratory Study on the Constellations and Mechanisms of Gender Discrimination in the Korean Scientific Community원문보기

In this paper, I have researched on the gender discrimination against women scientists in the Korean scientific community. I have also researched how gender discrimination happened and what were the major influential factors of the discrimination. The results of this research can be summarized as following three characteristics. First, I have looked at the influential factors on the career choice process of female students below the university level. It was found that parent's advice was as influential as the student's interests in the subject. Parents' influences can be classified either as affirmative perception and positive support or as negative perception on the unsuitability of the subject. In addition, teachers' career guidance is also significant. It was found that teachers usually recommended pharmacy or educationmajor more than natural science or engineering. This implies that career guidance in the high school has effected on the imbalance and concentration among science majors. Second, I have looked at the influential factors on the gender discrimination against the female graduate students from professors and other laboratory members. It was found that the male centered culture was operating in the laboratory. Not a few professors in several universities rejected the female students just because they were female. Male students excluded the female colleagues rather than cared for them. Inappropriate language use in strict hierarchy and uncomfortable atmosphere during the lab seminar imply the existence of military culture. These have oppressed female students physically and psychologically and have caused their desertions from the career paths. Third, I have looked at the influential factors on the gender discrimination and unreasonable events on the women scientists once they enter into the scientific community. It was found that men were preferred to women in private companies, public research institutes, and the academic world. Some women were unfairly rejected at the interview because of their sexes. As maternity and childcare leave functioned unfavorably in the assessment and affected negatively in the promotion, difficulties around childbirth and childcare deepened more. I have also found out that women scientists were placed at a disadvantageous position to execute the research project as they were excluded from the strong network of men scientists. Based on the results of this research, I propose some suggestions on the policy to eliminate gender discrimination to the women scientists in the Korean scientific community. First, gender discrimination against women scientists is connected with the education process and socialization in youth and social prejudice to women in science regarded as the biggest problem. Accepted ideas that the male are more suitable for science or science is male area are consistently injected in the earlier education process and these again have affected women scientists in the scientific community. Many changes are needed to dissolve these accepted ideas. Some of them are the elimination of gender distinctive contents from textbooks and reform of attitudes in education that gives female students a familiarity to science and engineering and gives male students recognition of responsibility for housekeeping and childcare. Mass communication media are crucial and effective to accelerate these changes. Second, effective policy for women scientists is as much important as the establishment of institutional devices. As of now, maternity and childcare leave can be used up to three months and one year, respectively. But these leavesare not used because of busy work and tense atmosphere. Childcare leaves which was originally designed to encourage economic activities of women, have not worked effectively and childbirth is now decreasing. This issue should be considered as applicable to all working women as well as women scientists. Third, the support is necessary to establish the human network for women scientists. There are some organization such as 'the association of Korean woman scientists and engineers.' But the future prospect for women scientists will be brighter if specialized network for women scientists and policy making for female scientific work force and its status enhancement are available. This paper has approached the constellations of gender discrimination against the women scientists in diverse areas by depth interview. This paper is meaningful in finding factors that influence gender discrimination from social and cultural aspects as well as from institutional and policy related aspects.
