Single Chamber Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SC-SOFCs) overwhelms the conventional SOFCs owing to the low temperature operation using hydrocarbon-oxidant mixed gas. Regarding the SC-SOFCs, the recent researches were mainly focused on the performance enhancement, especially, at low temperature. In spite of its advantage of miniaturization which comes from the compatibility with the silicon based integration process, little research has been reported except for electrolyte materials characterization. In the previous research, the proposed design and geometry of SC-SOFCs, which two electrodes are placed on the both side of electrolyte is not compatible with the thin film integration process. In this study, selecting the design which has the two electrodes are placed on the same side of electrolyte, on-planar type, SC-SOFC was fabricated by thin film processes and its electrochemical performances have been characterized.Thin film electrolyte, GDC was deposited on silicon substrate by RF/DC magnetron sputtering method. In case of electrode, Ni-Ru and Ni-GDC films were fabricated for anode and SSC and SSC-GDC films for cathode. Catalytic Ru-CeO2 layer was deposited on the anode surface in order to prevent from carbon deposition. Independent process optimization efforts for electrolyte, anode, and cathode layer fabrication, respectively, were given and followed by the physical property characterization.SC-SOFC unit cells were fabricated by using Ni-Ru for anode and SSC for cathode, which were deposited using RF/DC magnetron sputtering and sol-gel driven spin-coating, respectively. No signal was detected from the cell, because of the small volume of electrodes, electrodes densification, cathode decomposition and carbon deposition during operation. To solve the problems revealed, unit cells were modified to have composite type Ni-GDC and SSC-GDC as anode and cathode, respectively. Electrostatic spray deposition method was applied to fabricate composite electrodes, which shows efficient deposition rate, easy formation of porous film. The electrodes with micrometer-level thickness and porous structure were successfully deposited on the GDC electrolyte thin film surface. The powder additions aims to fabricate composite type electrodes were effective not only to control the thickness and pore structure of the electrode films but also to prevent electrodes from densification, decomposition and carbon deposition during operation. The fabricated SC-SOFCs were operated at 600 oC in methane-oxygen mixed gas atmosphere. In case the cathode-to-anode distance on the electrolyte surface is decreased, the power density was increased because the electrolyte resistance was decreased with closer distances. Furthermore, as the thickness of the cathode films increased in a fixed anode dimension, power density was increased possibly due to cathode polarization reduction.
