(Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke; ...

This study was to investigate the effects of weight shifting training on an unstable surface on onset latency of trunk muscles, balance performance, and proproception for patients with chronic stroke. twenty four subjects were recruited by means of a convenience sampling from Guri K hospital. The subject were divided into two groups: a weight shifting training group and a control group. The control group(n=12) received general physical therapy, whereas the weight shifting training group(n=12) received weight shifting training(using balance disc) in addition to general physical therapy. This process was carried out for a total of four weeks. The onset latency of trunk muscles, balance performance(BBS, PASS, TUG) and proprioception were measured prior to commencement of the training programs, and again after four weeks. The results of this study were as follows: both the weight shifting training group, and control group improved onset latency of trunk muscles, BBS, PASS, TUG(p<.05). The proprioception improved significantly only after weight shifting training(p<.05). The difference between before-after change scores of the groups was significant for onset latency of trunk muscles, balance performance in favour of weight shifting training group(p<.05). In conclusion, weight shifting training on an unstable surface is beneficial and effective for improving onset latency of trunk muscles, balance performance in the patients with stroke. Further studies of effectiveness of weight shifting training on an unstable surface should be carried out to increase our understanding of this area of study.
