Nanotechnology is a field of applied science and technology covering a broad range of topics. The main unifying theme is the control of matter on a scale smaller than 100 nanometers, as well as the fabrication of devices on this same length scale. It is a highly multidisciplinary field, drawing from fields such as colloidal science, device physics, and super molecular chemistry. Much speculation exists as to what new science and technology might result from these lines of research. Nanotechnology is also considered as a marketing term that describes pre-existing lines of research applied to the sub-micron size scale.
In addition to the development nano-technology, researches on nanosized powders have received considerable attention. Nano-scale materials are of great interest due to their unique optical, electrical and magnetic properties. These properties are strongly dependent on the size and shape of the powders and therefore it is very important to be able to control the morphology and size of the nanomaterials. The prospect of exploiting size-dependent properties opens in turn the way toward the development of new functional materials and advanced devices.
Therefore, nanosized materials have been synthesized by various preparation processes such as solid reaction method, liquid reaction methods including sol-gel, sol-precipitation, combustion synthesis, chemical co-precipitation, hydrothermal synthesis, gas reaction method and so on.
Among the methods, in this work, various types of multicomponent ceramic powders with nanosized such as Gd-doped cerium oxide as electrolyte of SOFC, barium titanate with tetragonal phase and nickel ferrite were prepared by modified spray pyrolysis and flame spray pyrolysis as gas reaction methods. A new capability for droplet generation through the filter expansion aerosol generator (FEAG) process has been found to control the morphology and size.
Nano-sized Ce_(1-x)Gd_(x)O₂(0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) powders were prepared by spray pyrolysis process from the spray solution with ethylene glycol. It is well known that the morphology, mean size and electrical properties of the ceria powders are affected by the doping concentration of dopant as well as the preparation method. In this work, thus, nano-sized ceria powders with various doping concentrations of gadolinium were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process. The mean sizes of Ce_(1-x)Gd_(x)O₂(x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) powders measured from the TEM images were each 46, 33, 29, and 28 nm. The mean crystallite size of pure CeO₂was 33 nm. However, the Gd-doped CeO₂had the mean crystallite size of 28 nm irrespective of the mole ratio of Gd to Ce components. The mean grain size of the sintered CeO₂pellet was about two or four times larger than those of the Gd-doped CeO₂pellets. The mean grain sizes of Ce_(0.9)Gd_(0.1)O₂and Ce_(0.8)Gd_(0.2)O₂pellets are about 0.5~0.4 μm. The pure CeO₂pellet had low relative density of 80 %. However, Ce_(0.9)Gd_(0.1)O₂and Ce_(0.8)Gd_(0.2)O₂pellets had the high relative densities above 95 %. The Ce_(0.9)Gd_(0.1)O₂and Ce_(0.8)Gd_(0.2)O₂pellets had similar conductivities at all measuring temperatures. The Ce_(0.9)Gd_(0.1)O₂pellet had conductivities of 4.73x10^(-2) and 1.16x10^(-1) Scm^(-1) at measuring temperatures of 800 and 900°C respectively.
Nano-sized BaTiO₃powders with regular morphology and tetragonal crystal structure were prepared by flame spray pyrolysis from a spray solution with citric acid. MLCC is the most commonly-used capacitor and possesses over 80% market share by quantity due to the high surface amounting ability, excellent reliability, and superior high-frequency characteristics. As the requirement for high volume-efficiency MLCC has been increased, a lot of researches about preparation of BaTiO₃powders, which is the major dielectric material in MLCCs, with uniform morphology and high tetragonality. Especially, liquid reaction synthesis has been extensively studied because it can give fine and spherical BaTiO₃directly after the reaction, unlike other synthesis like the solid state synthesis. However, the liquid reaction synthesis has problems related the production cost or quality. Therefore, flame spray pyrolysis as gas reaction synthesis was adapted to overcome these problems. The precursor powders prepared at the low flow rates of fuel gas at 2 and 2.5 L/min had large, hollow, thin wall structures. On the other hand, the precursor powders prepared at a high flow rate of fuel gas at 4 L/min had a dense submicronic structure. Those precursor powders with a hollow, thin wall structure formed a slightly aggregated BaTiO₃of nanometer sized primary powders after post-treatment. The slightly aggregated BaTiO₃became nano-sized powders via a simple milling process. The mean sizes of the powders changed from several tens to 200 nm when post-treatment temperatures changed from 700 to 1000°C. The BaTiO₃ powders obtained from the citric acid spray solution had tetragonal crystal structure at post-treatment temperature of 1000°C.
The nano-magnetic powders have unusual physical and chemical properties, significantly different from those conventional bulk materials due to their extremely small size or large specific surface area. The materials have been used in many applications such as high-density magnetic recording and magnetic fluids for the storage and/or retrieval of information, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement, catalysis, magnetically guided drug delivery, sensors and so on. Among the nano-magnetic powders, NiFe₂O₄powder is one of the most important magnetic materials. To enhance the properties, various methods have been developed to prepare the NiFe₂O₄powders with desired properties, including solid-state reaction, citrate precursor technique, co-precipitation, mechanical alloying, sol-gel, shock wave, reverse micelle, and hydrothermal process.
