The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of family emotional environment, depression, and anxiety on children's somatic symptoms. This study ultimately intended to provide various suggestions which can be applied for parent education program and childㆍfamily counseling. The theoretical model was specified and estimated. Subjects of this study consisted of 629 elementary school students drawn from 5 elementary schools in Cheong-ju city. The pilot study was used to examine the applicability of survey instrument. Data were analyzed by frequency, Cronbach's α, t-test, ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test, and correlation using SPSS 12.0 program. The test of model was done with analysis of correlational matrix in AMOS 5.0 package using a maximum likelihood estimation. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were statistically differences in family emotional expression according to grade and mother's academic backgrounds, children's hostility towards parents was different from grade and birth order, and parent's martial conflict differed in mother's academic background. Second, the theoretical model proposed was supported by the data and fitted adequately for boys and girls. For both gender, children's somatic symptoms was indirectly influenced by family emotional expression for boys and girls. Moreover, family emotional expression mediated by depression had an indirect effect on children's somatic symptoms. Third, there were differences in the effects of parent's martial conflict, depression and anxiety on children's somatic symptoms according to children's gender. For boys and girls, parent's martial conflict affected indirectly children's somatic symptoms. For boy's, parent's martial conflict mediated by anxiety had an indirect effects on children's somatic symptoms. Otherwise, for girl's, parent's martial conflict mediated by anxiety and depression had an indirect effects on children's somatic symptoms. Fourth, for both gender, children's hostility towards parents indirectly influenced children's somatic symptoms, mediated by anxiety and depression. Fifth, there were differences in family emotional environment indirectly influenced children's somatic symptoms, mediated by anxiety and depression according to children's gender. Boys were directly affected in their somatic symptoms by depression while girls were directly affected by anxiety. Sixth, Among the family emotional environments, children's hostility towards parents were the most influential factor that affects on children's somatic symptoms for both gender. In addition, girl's hostility towards parents were more highly than boy's. In conclusion, this study indicate that family emotional environment that consisted of family emotional expression, parent's conflict, and children's hostility towards parents has an effect on children's somatic symptoms through depression and anxiety, by gender. Therefore, there should be programs that can be used for parent education and counseling in order to solve this issue.
