The purpose of this study was to examine the problem of safety control of imported foods and the practicality of its improvement strategies. A questionnaire survey of 128 importers was carried out to find out their behavior and recognition for import. A questionnaire was developed on the basis of literature examination. Data were statistically analysed with the SPSS Window 12.0 program. Result of this study are as follows: Importers generally felt constraint with quality check and food inspection which were carried out at the time of importing foods. Although they recognize the importance of pre-inspection to ensure the safety of food, the rate of use of overseas certified inspection agencies seems to be low. In addition, they showed great importance to the price of products. In particular, the people importing foods from China or sanitarily underdeveloped countries had a priority on the price competitiveness. As for the knowledge on food safety, they knew its necessity, but their knowledge was generally insufficient. Most of all importers handled foods and acquired information via licensed customs accountants or agencies. While safety accident of imported food occurs, they recognized the responsibilities were imposed on manufacturers, export countries and importers mainly. And they felt the greatest importance are required at the pre-step of import for ensuring safety of imported food. As for ensuring safety of importing foods from China, they recognized the requirement of intense inspection of domestic factories in China, enlargement of oversea certified inspection agencies, increase in resident inspectors, and intensified collection of information, Their level of recognition of safety must be improved through tight management of importers and agencies. By increasing the number of resident inspectors in China, the function of information collecting must be reinforced. In addition, by means of enlargement of oversea certified inspection agencies and activating various systems, the safety of products must be ensured in advance.
