The purpose of this study is to illuminate the relationship of the prototype theory and semantics and the usefulness of prototype idea in semantic analysis, and to evaluate the status of prototype semantics in lexical semantics through comparison with structural semantics. The perspective of word meaning in lexical semantics is divided into the analytical view of meaning, which can be analyzed into semantic features, and the holistic view of meaning. The cognitive psychological prototype theory originates from the holistic view of concept. Recently, the paradigm of semantics has switched from logical semantics, which is included in structural semantics in a broad sense, to cognitive semantics. Within the relational structure described by structural semantics, cognitive semantics deals only with various relations in the lexical field. That is, the concern of cognitive semantics is what a certain word means in connection with the classes of non-linguistic realities. The prototype in the standard version is regarded as the best exemplars, representatives, or central elements. That is, the basic idea of category is that a category is not a set of exemplars equal with one another but includes better exemplars than others. By expressing a category with a prototype, Rosch attempts to break away from the concept of classical category based on necessary and sufficient conditions. In the extended version, prototype is removed from its strict characteristic of categorization, and appears in various forms according to the kind of category. There are only prototype effects rather than prototypes as mental expression of category. The basic principle in the extended version is the concept of family resemblance. This concept is that the members of a category can associate with one another without sharing the attributes defining the category. The development of prototypes has been acclaimed as a radical breakthrough in concept research. Because meanings are related to concepts, prototypes are important for semantic theory and semantic analysis. Prototype theory is contrasted with the definitional view of concepts, which is the view that all instances of a concept share common necessary and sufficient properties. Despite the wide variety of opinions on prototype, the instances of a concept may vary in the degree of membership to the category according to the degree of properties sharing. Of course, properties are arranged hierarchically in terms of importance. Not only in prototype semantics but also in feature semantics, a class of things or facts is central, but in feature semantics there are common attributes for each of clearly distinguished classes and for all the classes. These attributes are all definitional, and there is no gradient among them. In structural semantics, a meaning is not designated class but the content of an individual language. For example, structural semantics concentrates on difference in a specific meaning among languages such as English, German, and French, and then discusses individual words. Like feature semantics, prototype semantics is also devoted to the relation between words and objects, but it examines words in an individual language regarded as a universal language. Structural semantics also takes interest in the relation between words and things. Analytical semantics has aspects inappropriate to reality, and prototype semantics relying on holistic view of concepts may also be valid in limited areas. However, even if the two confront and criticize each other due to differences in their view to semantic analysis, it is believed to the appealing characteristic of prototype semantics that it allows the interpretation of polysemy based on the universal language by switching from the traditional atomic view of concepts to a holistic view. Prototype semantics as an attempt to approach the complex reality closest has considerably high descriptive power but its explanatory power is lower than analytical semantics. Because of the obvious differences between the two theories in the areas of interest and application, if they are integrated in a supplementary way, they are expected to produce synergy effect in semantic analysis.
