Most common sewage treatment processes are biological processes. These processes utilizing microorganisms have high treatment efficiency and stable water quality but those require large site area and also there are many difficulties to be used as an advanced treatment process for water reuse.
On the other hand, Electro-coagulation (EC) process makes current passage to electrode and removes organic matter using eluted out metallic ions. This process only requires small scale site area and a simple installation, and has high removal efficiency with short period of contact time.
Lab scale test was performed to investigate the treatment efficiency of electrocoagulation (EC) for the removal of organic matters. The test results were shown BOD 90%, CODCr 86%, T-P 97% and SS 94% removal. However, the removal efficiency of T-N was very low at 40%; therefore, additional advanced treatment process was needed. In order to improve the low T-N removal efficiency, ion exchange process was added for removal of NH4+ found in wastewater. And, zeolite was used for NH4+ removal. The results of batch type equilibrium adsorption test show that the removal efficiency of NH4+ was 87% by zeolite.
Secondary effluent estimated the removal efficiency using the electrocoagulation process. The removal efficiency of secondary effluent by electrocoagulation on BOD, CODCr, T-N, T-P and SS has confirmed its applicability given that CODCr removal efficiency of 67.5%, BOD 71.5%, T-N 48.1%, T-P 99.0% and SS 99.0%, respectively. Removal efficiency for secondary effluent appeared lower than raw wastewater. It seems to reason of the effect of lower conductivity. According to results obtained from the experiments when it is applied to electrocoagulation as post treatment process of biological treatment process, removal efficiency of organic matter and phosphorus were high. Therefore, the EC process is possibly suitable for a post treatment process. Ion exchange process using zeolite was applied as a method for advanced treatment. In the case of electrocoagulation, because nitrogen removal was low, ion exchange process using zeolite was effective.
If adding anion exchange process for NO3 removal, this process can be applied in post treatment process of biological treatment process. It may be very effective process. Also, electrocoagulation and ion exchange process may be possible application in small-scale rural and fishery regions. Because there regions show high pollution loading rates, and influent changes are large; so it is hard to treat by biological treatment. Therefore, if this process is applied to rural and fishery regions, it may be provide a stable treatment result.
