In this study, the methods for suitability selection for successful marine afforestation enhancement are discussed. In selecting suitability, the geological characteristics and oceanic environmental factors around the marine afforestation area were considered. Suitability was quantitatively and qualitatively estimated by a Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) model of the target algae, and with current and wave distribution in the study area. 1) Chapter 2 focuses on the environmental habitat conditions of target macro brown algae, such as Laminaria japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, and Eckloniacava Kjellman. According to the results of the analysis on the correlation between the target algae and the environmental conditions, it was determined that extratropical algae were suitable target algae in the study area, and that the bottom sediment was a composite of gravel and sand, which provides good conditions to install reefs for the marine afforestation. 2) Chapter 3 discusses the extension of marine afforestation by the dispersion of algae seeds. The movement of algae seeds was calculated by numerical experiments using a particle tracer. The course of particle movement corresponded to the patterns of the residual current. Particles were evenly dispersed along the coastal line of the entire study area, therefore, it was established that marine afforestation could be effectively carried out. 3) Chapter 4 discusses the stability of reefs for fishery resource enhancement against a 50 year-period wave action using a numerical wave basin (the model name is CADMAS-SURF). CADMAS-SURF was verified with a real wave basin. The wave height calculated by CADMAS-SURF was 15~20% higher than the wave height of the real wave basin. To calculate the stability of the reefs against hydrodynamic force, the water particle velocity calculated by CADMAS-SURF was used, and these results were compared with the existing formula for hydrodynamic force in the wave breaking zone. We discovered that the reef stability weight calculated from the existing formula was more than 2 times higher than the results of the present study. This suggests that the existing formula could possibly lead to design excess. In addition, the wave characteristics calculated from CADMAS-SURF were applied to select the suitability of the area for marine afforestation. 4) The suitability for marine afforestation is estimated in Chapter 5 using the results of Chapters 2, 3, and 4. To quantitatively evaluate the suitability, both the physical suitability for reefs and the ecological suitability for algae were estimated. The ecological suitability for algae was estimated by the HSI model. The estimated suitability was distributed along the bathymetry, and it was determined that stability for marine afforestation was impacted by light and wave conditions, which are factors that are changed by depth. Therefore, it can be said that for successful marine afforestation, it is desirable to install reefs in belt-type areas along the same bathymetry, which ensures consistent light and wave action conditions.
