Over the last decade, due to a wide use of natural gas and its certain environmental benefit in comparison to oil and coal, the size and the number of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) carriers have been increasing rapidly to meet projected natural gas demand around the world and the size of cargo tanks used also become bigger. Due to the large size of cargo tanks, pressure in the internal cargo tank increases dramatically, in particular, a large sloshing impact causes structural damage. The structural failure of the cargo containment system can lead to extremely dangerous situations including loss of life, pollution of the environment, damage and loss of property therefore precise safety assessment for LNG cargo tank that is a key issue should be considered. The aim of this paper is to develop nonlinear finite element analysis design regarding the MARK III type LNG carrier cargo tanks under either static pressure of sloshing impact pressure actions for structure safety assessment. Using a commercial nonlinear FEA code, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, the range of modeling and the method of modeling are evaluated and the technique of analysis for optimum structure analysis is suggested. The suggested technique is applied for dynamic analysis using a commercial dynamic FEA analysis code, LS-DYNA-3D by numerical analysis. A series of numerical simulation on a full scale structure model including membrane corrugations, primary barrier sheet(stainless steel), RPUF(reinforced poly-urethane foam) insulation panels and secondary barrier are undertaken under static pressure and sloshing impacts arising from portion loading. In this study, it is intended to provide information regarding static strength performance and dynamic strength analysis of LNG tanks based on a number of nonlinear finite element analysis results. The insights and conclusions developed from this study will be useful for structure safety assessment and management on LNG cargo tank.
