AStudy of the Factors that Have an Influence for College Students from Local Campus to Adapt Themselves to Campus Life원문보기

This paper has aimed to examine how college students from local campus adapt themselves to campus life and the influence factors and secure useful data to lead them to a right direction. For this, theoretical background has been described through a preliminary study on how college students from local campus fit in the campus life. To find out the influence on their adaptation to the campus life, furthermore, significant factors that were estimated from the preliminary study have been examined. The calculated independent variables have been classified into social-demographic variable, local campus-life variable and social support variable.
For survey, social support scale and campus life adaptation scale were used. In terms of the social support scale, the one developed by Ji-WonPark(1985)inhisstudy‘Work for Development of Social Support Scale’ has been used. In terms of the campus life adaptation scale, on the contrary, the scale developed by Baker&Siryk (1984) and adapted by Jin-Won Hyeon (1992) was used. The survey was conducted against 477 male and female college students from ‘K’ University in Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do.
The data were analyzed using SPSS WIN (Ver. 12.0). To investigate cognitive difference in social support and campus life adaptation by background variable in terms of means and standard deviation, t-test and F-test have been performed. The relation between social support and campus life adaptation was analyzed based on Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. To investigate the campus life adaptation which takes socio-demographic background, local campus life and social support as input variables, on the contrary, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted.
The result has turned out as follows:
First, male students were better than female students in terms of adaptation to campus life. Specifically, male students were excellent in social adaptation, personal emotional adaptation and adaptation to campus environment, which in turn means that female students are relatively poor at adapting themselves to campus life. Therefore, it’s necessary to improve female students’ adaptation to campus life.
Second, difference in adaptation to campus life was observed in terms of type of housing. According to the survey, students who live in a school dormitory or a studio apartment or in lodgings near the school were much better than those who commute to campus in terms of adaptation to campus life, which in turn means that those who commute are not good at fitting in campus life. In fact, commuting students showed a poor level in academic adaptation, social adaptation and adaptation to campus environment. In other words, it’s necessary to elaborate a plan to help commuting students enjoy a safe and comfortable campus life.
Third, difference in adaptation to campus life was also observed depending on the experience of club activities. Those who had club activities were excellent in academic adaptation, social adaptation and adaptation to campus environment, compared to the students who didn’t. In sum, it’s necessary to facilitate club activities.
Fourth, it has turned out that faculty support had a great impact on students’ adaptation to campus life in the category of social support. In particular, students with a professor’s support showed high level in academic adaptation, social adaptation and adaptation to campus environment. Therefore, the interaction between professors and students should be promoted to improve students’ adaptation to campus life.
