Different physical techniques as photostimulated luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses were conducted for the identification of various irradiated dried seafood products. For TL analysis, minerals were separated using density separation and acid hydrolysis methods, and TL glow characteristics were compared. X-ray diffraction analysis was also employed to investigate the minerals composition which was the source of specific TL glow curve characteristics. PSL technique was effective to screen anchovy, shrimp and shellfish even at low dose of 1 kGy whereas positive results were obtained for 5 kGy-irradiated mussel and 10 kGy-irradiated herring samples. However, this technique could not provide satisfactory results for irradiated cod, dried filefish, dried pollack, hairtail, herring, little pollack, plaice, saury, squid and beka squid samples, requiring more effective and reliable methods to check the irradiation status of these samples. Radiation-induced ESR signals were prominent in 1, 5, 10 kGy-irradiated little pollack samples. Identification was possible in 5, 10 kGy-irradiated cod, dried pollack, hairtail, herring, plaice and 10 kGy-irradiated anchovy and saury samples. Dried filefish, squid, beka squid, mussel, shellfish and shrimp were found silent for radiation -specific ESR signals. TL analysis provided most promising results where acid hydrolysis provided superior results over density separation method of mineral separation. All non-irradiated samples provided low intensity TL glow curve with maximum peak after 250oC. However, high intensity TL glow curves with well defined peaks were obtained in temperature range of 150-250oC for all irradiated samples. The glow curve characteristics were clearer when minerals were separated through acid hydrolysis technique. There liability of TL results was further confirmed through normalization step by re-irradiating(1kGy) already measured (TL1) minerals on the discs. The second TL glow curve (TL2) was measured and TL ratio(TL1/TL2) was calculated. All non-irradiated samples provided TL ratio0.1 confirming the quality of minerals on the discs with the exception of 1 kGy-irradiated hairtail, saury, and dried pollack and 5 kGy-irradiated saury (TLratio<0.1). Therefore, acid hydrolysis method were determined as more suitable method for dried fishery products than density separation method. In the results of XRD(X-ray Diffractometer) analysis, the mineral separated by density separation and acid hydrolysis method of shrimp and shellfish didn't have any remarkable difference in containing quarts and Na-feldspar. However in case of little pollack and dried pollack, the difference was identified because of the fact that there were more quartz than Na-feldspar by density separation, there were more Na-feldspar than quartz by acid hydrolysis method. In conclusion, PSL and ESR technique would be effective for limited number of dried fishery products; however TL analysis particularly after mineral separation through acid hydrolysis could provide conclusive information to confirm the irradiation status of irradiated dried fishery products.
