A SRM (Switched Reluctance Motor) is composed of silicon steel plates where the rotor structure is simple and laminated without coil winding or permanent magnet, making it mechanically robust and its maintenance and repair excellent. Also, it has simple stator winding coils which allows shorter end-turns than other types of motors. Due to the double salient structure of SRM, its magnetic characteristics are highly nonlinear. Since the flux linkage is represented as a nonlinear function of stator current as well as rotor position, the generated electric torque becomes a nonlinear function. These characteristics make the control of SRM difficult. This paper attempts to investigate the design and control simulation of SRM to apply SRM in a railway traction. In design simulation, SRMs having three different types of stator pole shape are taken for magnetic analysis using 3d finite element method. It is observed that the proposed model gives improved magnetic characteristic. In speed control simulation, PI and Sliding mode controllers are designed. Two speed control methods for SRM are designed using magnetic characteristic obtained from the designed SRM with FEM. The simulation results are compared and the performance is analyzed. By employing the sliding mode controller, the transient response as well as the steady-state error is much improved even under a load variation.
