Knuckle kick is one of the most effective kick skills used in soccer set pieces. The objectives of this study were to examine differences in the biomechanical characteristics of the kicking motion for the knuckball and instep kick ball in elite soccer players.
Twelve soccer players participated in the experiment. While performing 10 knuckle kicks and 10 instep kicks movements a 3-D motion capture system, force platform and wireless EMG were used to record kinematic and kinetic data. The kicking motion was divided into 4 phases; approach, back swing, forward swing and follow through.
Results revealed that there was no significant difference in ball speed between 2 kick movements. Ball spin was significantly higher, approximately two times for the instep kick. The duration of forward swing phase was significantly shorter for instep kick. Positive acceleration of foot segment, as well as negative acceleration were significantly faster for instep kick. At impact event, the location of COM of foot was 10 mm closer to center of ball in knuckle kick. The path of COM of foot tended to pass through a small circle for instep kick motion. At the impact, the supporting foot was closer to the center of the ball; knee extension angle and external rotation angle were higher for the instep kick. Flexion angle of trunk was higher and internal rotation angle of trunk was lower for the instep kick. There were no significant differences between knuckle kick and instep kick movement for all the measured muscle activity levels during the kick.
Future studies should include a detailed analysis of the effect of the upper body during the knuckball kick as this study reveals that there were several different patterns during the performance of the kick. Similarly the muscle control and activation levels needs to be studied in more detail.
