Due to the ability to identify objects wirelessly without line-of-sight, RFID systems are becoming noticeably prevalent. RFID systems are rated to be particularly attractive for applications such as retail, inventory management, and supply-chain management. Collision due to simultaneous tag responses is one of the key issues in RFID systems. It wastes bandwidth and energy as well as increasing identification delays. To minimize collisions, RFID readers must use an anti-collision protocol. The design of anti-collision protocols becomes more challenging on considering that the tags must be simple, cheap and small enough. In this thesis, we investigate several representative anti-collision protocols associated with passive RFID tag identification processes and suggest various methods for performance enhancements. Firstly, we establish a formulation of the optimal design problem by focusing on three factors: the precise estimation of number of tags in a reader's interrogation zone, proper values for frame sizes, and process termination time. All of three factors are associated with Dynamic Frame Slotted Aloha protocol most commonly used for RFID systems. Based on the formulation, we propose a simplified estimation method for determining optimal frame sizes and termination time under an independence assumption as well as a new tag-estimation function that utilizes multiple past observations via sample averages. Secondly, we propose a new procedure for RFID tag identification and a rule for determining proper frame sizes, instead of directly using the estimated optimal frame sizes, in the context of minimizing the overall identification delay. Finally, we consider two representative tree-based anti-collision protocols, namely QT(Query Tree) based and BT(Binary Tree) based protocols. We propose to utilize collision patterns frequently occurring in tag read processes for performance improvement of QT based protocols. As for BT based protocols, we identify an operational error associated with ABS(Adaptive Binary Splitting) protocol, possibly arising when the so-called capture effects are applied. We provide a modification for remedying the aforementioned problem. Through computer simulations, we compare our scheme with some representative schemes and show that the proposed schemes indeed outperform the other schemes in terms of identification delay and accuracy.
