The purpose of this study was to recover valuable metals from red mud, which is a byproduct of Bayer process (an alumina purification process from bauxite mineral). The five major experimental variables used in the recovery of valuable metals were the intensity of ultrasound, the concentration of acid solution, the reaction temperature, the reaction time, and the solid-liquid ratio. The ICP was used to measure the elements of valuable metals in the leachate, and then the rate of recovery was calculated for each valuable metal. In addition, XRD, SEM, and EDS analyzers were used to evaluate the constituents of initial red mud prior to the experiment. Results of the experiments showed that the recovery rates increased more than 17.9% for Ti, 74.96% for Fe, and 27.92% for Al when ultrasound was irradiated during the process of valuable metal recovery using an acidic solution compared to the cases when ultrasound was not irradiated. Also, the concentration of acidic solution and reaction temperature showed proportional relations with the rate of valuable metal recovery, while the solid-liquid ratio and the reaction time did not show much relation. The optimum experimental condition to recover valuable heavy metals from red mud using an acidic solution was as follows: the intensity of ultrasound 150W; the concentration of acidic solution 6N; the reaction temperature 70℃; the solid-liquid ratio 2%; and the reaction time 2 hours. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the maximum recovery rates were 95.34%, 50.65%, 77.87% for Ti, Fe, and Al, respectively.
