Acne is a common chronic disease which most frequently affects the face, and treatment of steroid drugs have various side effects. The purpose of this study as to investigate the effects of broccoli and cabbage extracts on anti-oxidation and anti-microbial. Broccoli and cabbage were extracts by using four solvents (ethanol, hexane, propylene glycol, butylene glycol). Four extracts of broccoli and cabbage were identified to contain sulforaphane through TLC analysis. Anti-microbial activity of broccoli extracts showed higher than activity of cabbage extracts. Anti-oxidative activities of broccoli and cabbage were evaluated by DPPH-radical scavenging activity and superoxide radical scavenging activity in vitro. Broccoli propylene glycol extract and cabbage butylene glycol extract showed slightly lower activity than that of vitamin C in DPPH scavenging activity. but ethanol and hexane extracts of broccoli and cabbage showed slightly lower activity than that of vitamin C in superoxide radical scavenging activity. Anti-inflammatory activity of broccoli and cabbage extracts were measured by NO assay in LPS-treated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Butylene glycol and propylene glycol extracts of broccoli and cabbage showed higher activity than that of propolis through NO assay. Considering these results, this study suggested that broccoli and cabbage have significant anti-oxidative and anti-microbial activity in Propionibacterium acne. Therefore broccoli and cabbage may be used as potential anti-oxidative and anti-microbial therapeutic materials.
