Since lithium-ion batteries became commercially available in the early 1990s, the price of lithium resource has been gradually raised, because of increasing demands for lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, the incertitude to lithium resources has boosted this as one of the major problems. Recently, sodium(Na) batteries have gained the great interest as a good alternative due to many advantages such as low cost and abundance over lithium. It is reported that conventional carbon materials such as amorphous carbon and active carbon can be used as anode materials for Na-ion batteries. The reversible capacity of carbon black vs Na/Na+ was about 200 mAh/g and hard carbon had a capacity of about 300 mAh/g. However, a new anode material is reguired to increase the energy density of Na-ion batteries. Among the candidates as anode active materials for Na-ion battery, tin(Sn) has attracted the most intensive interest, because of its high theoretical capacity of 847 mAh/g. In the electrochemical reaction, Sn alloys with maximum 3.75 Na in the manner suggested by the Na-Sn phase diagram. The alloying of Na and Sn results in 424% volume expansion, whith is the major drawback for the development Na-Sn batteries system. In this work, the Sn electrode which has a porous structure to buffer this volume expansion is prepared by the non-solvent induced phase inversion process and investigated for the electrochemical properties.
