Life systems can be viewed as the expression of complexity across different scales ranging from the individual, population, community, and ecosystem. At each level, stochastic processes were applied to infer functional and structural properties of the system. At the individual level, movement behaviors of the indicator species were selected as a main attribute and were analyzed by the Markov process. The transition probability matrix of the hidden Markov model efficiently presented changes in behavioral patterns under stressful conditions. At the population level, the birth–death process was utilized to approximate an evolutionary reaction-diffusion equation for distribution of aquatic insects adapted to a stream ecosystem. Branching of adapted velocity was strongly influenced by dispersal kernels of individuals in response to biological (e.g., competition) and physical (e.g., water velocity) factors. At the community level, the birth–death process was further accommodated to establish species in the model and could reproduce the species–abundance distribution (SAD). The SADs were compared with the empirical data and the model results were closely reflected by the impact of the environmental slopes. At the ecosystem level, different states of the community in response to natural and anthropogenic disturbances were expressed by the parameters (i.e., Shannon’s diversity and exergy) based on information and thermodynamics theories. These parameters provided a reference system for water quality assessments and were efficiently comparable with the biological and physicochemical indices. Overall, the selected attributes were feasible to present ecological integrity at each level, and the attributes could be further integrated across different levels to comprehensively address life system characteristics such as adaptability and stability. The objective expression of a complex life system will contribute to broadening the scope of mathematical biology regarding understanding the mechanisms of life processes and providing indispensable information for predicting and establishing sustainable practical ecosystem management.
