Production process of shipbuilding is performed in the broad shipyard with many workers and a lot of organized units. In the case of ships and offshore projects, the number of parts is huge. Besides, the work stages are a highly complicated process. Furthermore, it is absolutely difficult for both managers and workers to administer and prepare all process and parts from design to production in accordance with the characteristics of the new product since most of shipbuilding projects are engineering-to-order manufacturing types, except in the case of series projects. In particular, in the case of offshore project design is occasionally changed during production and also, if unexpected problems basically happen, the response about re-design frequently occurs in the production stage. Thus, it is almost impossible to be accurately identified because it is difficult to understand and manage all the details of a large number of processes taking place in the broad shipyard with many workers. Nevertheless, production schedulers and managers continuously try to pinpoint all the process during each project and after project to plan an efficient next project. The purpose of this thesis has the aim to analyze production status and history based on the accumulated data from information system and to contribute to the effective production planning and management. In order to understand real process and find enhancement points in the view of production management, we applied process mining techniques, which are able to discover process model from event logs of the information accumulated in the system and perform several analysis based on process model. A ship or offshore project is divided into hundreds of properly sized blocks which are to be manufactured in assembly shops. Each block is assembled in an assembly shop, and then performed outfitting, painting operations, and is finally erected in dock or pre-erection area to be a ship or ocean project. A production manager focuses on movement and stock of assembly block after assembly block is manufactured. However, before assembly block is manufactured, the manager focuses on the effective resource utilization of assembly shops to make assembly blocks. Thus, this thesis also focuses on two-type problems, block movement after manufacturing assembly block, and block assembly operations to making assembly block. In the block movement problem, an analysis framework is proposed using several process mining techniques, which can cover many problems from discovering block movement patterns to finding exceptional events and processes. In this problem, Re-handling movement, Reverse movement and Un-necessary movement are defined as unexceptional movements, and all block movements are evaluated if they are exceptional or not. In the second problem, block assembly problem, a clustering method of assembly blocks is proposed based on the consideration of work stage and utilization of work shop. The resulting clusters of proposed approach were similar to the plan clusters of the production schedulers managed by those experiences. In addition, our result was able to not only explain the characteristics of clusters more concretely, but also find the process characteristics per cluster. We also proposed an effective comparison method between planned and actual data for block assembly operations by the four perspectives; process model, task, process instance and fitness. For each perspective, comparison factors were defined. Using the approach, it is possible to compare planned and actual data in an easy and quick way from several perspectives. The approaches proposed in this study are expected to be used for analyzing production process based on data of information system in shipbuilding industry, and help to find process enhancement points for production planning and management. The effectiveness of the proposed methods was verified with the case study using real data of production information system of a top ranked shipbuilding company in Korea.
