Cadmium(Cd) is widely distributed in the environment, and carcinogenic to human. A general population group not exposed to cadmium in works is exposed through contaminated water and food. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the iron and toxicity of a kidney and the cadmium accumulation aspect in a kidney exposed through drinking water, which is the target organ of cadmium, experimenting iron-depleted laboratory animals. Drinking water of 0, 10 and 100 mg Cd/L cadmium densities was injected for 4 or 8 weeks to iron deficient and sufficient animals respectively. The concentration of Cd inside the kidney tissue was increased with the amount and period of dose, and showed more increase in the iron-sufficient group than the deficient group in the case of low dose groups. The levels of NAG activity, RBP and MDA in urine were increased after cadmium injection, and these changes were apparent in the iron-deficient group. In addition, an increase of morphological findings in cadmium injections was keenly observed in the iron-deficient group. These results implies that not only the accumulation and absorption mechanism inside tissues is different by the cadmium exposure amounts but also low dose of cadmium exposure can sensitively affect in iron's influence of cadmium absorption. In summary of results so far, repeated cadmium exposure through drinking water produces kidney toxicity, and its toxicity is susceptible in the case of iron deficient body due to an increase of cadmium absorption inside kidney tissues. In addition. as one of toxicity mechanisms, it is thought that oxidative stress is involved.
