Recently, development of alternative energy has been actively investigated due to a tendency of the discovery market and development of oil and gas industry are still increasing. Many steel pipes are used to support and drive oil as resources moving from deep seas to the land. However, the construction of these subsea pipes is difficult because of the connecting between the vessels and pipe systems as well as the unexpected defects always occur during operation. Therefore, it is necessary to find the weak parts in these pipes, depending on the load conditions of stress and deformation behaviors. In order to connect the long pipes together, the welding connection is needed. Welding location of steel pipes is always generated tensile residual stresses and welding distortion which are detrimental effects when using these pipes under superimposed loading conditions. In this study, the characteristics of tensile residual stresses and welding deformation in pipe systems have been conducted by using self-development of three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis. In the welding pipe consideration, the geometrical shape is also adopted for more accurate calculation. In the case of subsea pipe system, the high influence by surrounding environment should be considered. Furthermore, typical loading conditions affect to pipe structures during the construction are also evaluated such as compressing, bending, cycle loading, respectively. The behaviors of welded pipe structures under residual stresses and superimposed external loads are employed by FE program to assess the working capabilities of subsea pipe system.
