Despite the lately increasing interest in research on military counselling, there is great lack in the number of military related studies done until now. It is necessary, therefore, to reveal and study the factors that affect military life adaptation to effectively apply on military counselling. In this study, the impact of army soldier’s parent attachment on perceived social support and military life adaptation was examined to analyze whether perceived social support works as a parameter variable of military life adaptation. The study questions are as follows: First, is there any difference in military life adaptation depending on study subjects’ demographic characteristics? Second, what are the inter-relations of parent attachment, perceived social support and military life adaptation? Third, does the lower variable of parent attachment and perceived social support predict the lower variable of military life adaptation to be statistically significant? Fourth, in regards to the relation between parent attachment and military life adaptation, does social support illustrate a mediator effect? The surveys in this study was made by 331 army soldier based in Kyung-gi region using Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment - Armsden and Greenberg(1987), Social Provision Scale - Cutrona and Russell(1987) and Military life adaptation measure - Seungshin Koo(2004)as survey method. The collected data were implemented in descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation and coefficient, one-way analysis of variance, multiple regression analysis, and mediator effect verification by Baron and Kenny(1986) using SPSS 18.0. The results of this study are as below: First, a difference in military life adaptation was shown according to the demographic characteristic of the subject. In the overall military life adaptation it showed significant difference only in military rank, with higher adaptation shown the higher the rank goes. As a result of relative influence of military rank, parent attachment and perceived social support, the influence order was: parent attachment, perceived social support, military rank. Second, all influence of parent attachment in perceived social support showed to be significant implying that the more parent attachment, the higher the perceived social support. Third, when looking at the impact of parent attachment on military life adaptation, it was shown to be significant therefore denoting that the more the parent attachment, the higher the adaptation rate. Fourth, when looking at the impact of perceived social support on military life adaptation, it was shown to be significant therefore denoting that the higher the perceived social support, the higher the adaptation rate. Fifth, perceived social support was shown to be a parameter variable of attachment and military life adaptation and the significance was shown in both father and mother attachment. This study examined parent attachment and perceived social support—related to the recognition of interaction with others. As a result it was found that parent attachment stability has direct influence of soldier’s military life adaptation, with perceived social support having indirect influence. These results will help to understand and manage maladjustment soldiers as well as preventing military accident and crime most soldiers are likely to experience during their service. Also, if a systematic program that utilizes effective support of parents, family, friends and in-military source is established, such program is expected to contribute to military development in the long run.
