The purpose of this study is to examine the Sandang faction from Usurpation by King Injo until the reign of King Hyojong and King Hyunjong in late Chosun era, with a focus on the members of the faction and their political activities. The implication of this study is to take notice of the Sandang Faction, which was one of the most representative group among the Samrim based on the existing studies on the Samrim which wielded a significant influence in the central theater of the politics in the 17th century Korea. Firstly, before discussing the formation of the Sandang faction, I examined the Sanrim group. After the usurpation of his predecessor, King Injo brought the Sanrim group to the capital to secure justification of his usurpation and restore order in the society. In his effort to 'respect and embrace the Samrim group,' King Injo established separate public offices for the members of the Sanrim Group. Jaejoo and Saeop of Seongyungwan, as well as Chanseon, Jinseon, and Jaeui of the Council of the Crown Price (Sejasigangwon) were such posts. Such offices were taken by Jip Kim, Joongil Song, Siyeol Song, and Yootae Leek who were all students of Jangsaeng Kim, were of the Sandang Faction. However, the Sanrim faction, which was called as 'Seorim' was again divided into Wondang, Nakdang, Sandang, and Handang by the later days of King Injo. Sandang was headed by Jip Kim and Sanghun Kim. Noticeable members of the group included the Sanrim members, including Siyeol Song and Joongil Song, who were mostly from Yeonsan or Hoedeok of Choongcheong Province. Starting from this background, I focused on reviewing the prominent members of the Sandang faction. Especially, I examined their relationships and networks mediated by their academic backgrounds, geographical backgrounds, and marital relationships between their families, as shown in 'Dangeuitongryak' and 'Ojaeginyeon.' The members of Sandang group could be divided into three subgroups, which were Sandoo, Sanshim, and Sanin, all of which form well separated groups of their own from others. Lastly, I examined their political activities and their philosophy of politics. King Hyojong recruited a lot of Sangdang members in his council to develop his ambitions to ‘Conquer the North (Bukbeol.’) Also, the Sandang faction introduced some innovative policies, such as the Hopo Act and the Nobijongmo Act. For the famous Daedong Act, they confronted Handang in the early days of the implementation of the act. Therefore, in order for a comprehensive understanding of the Sanrim group, it is necessary to study the Sandang faction, which lasted the longest among all factions within the Sanrim group.
