This study aims to investigate the differences in the level of stress and internalization·externalization between poor adolescent and non-poor adolescent and to compare and analyze the type of stress that affect internalization and externalization of poor and non-poor adolescents. The Korean Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) data was used for analysis. To investigate the research problem on the differences between each group in the influence of subtypes of stress on internalization and externalization, 4th-year secondary school panel was used for stress of poverty and adolescents and 5th-year secondary school panel was used for internalization and externalization issues of adolescents. The number of surveyed people for the 4th-year secondary school were 3,121, the 90.5% of 3,449 from the 1st-year survey and for the 5th-year survey, the number was 2,967, the 86% of 3,449 from the 1st-year survey. The study result can be summarized as following. First, the stress of poor and non-poor adolescents was shown differently by each subtype. For poor adolescents, appearance stress and economic stress were significantly higher than non-poor adolescents and the parents stress of non-poor adolescents were significantly higher than that of poor adolescents. The highest stress for the both groups was academic stress and this disposition shows how our society is giving lots of pressure on all adolescents by focusing only on college entrance and educational background. Second, there was a significant difference between the poor and non-poor adolescents in anxiety and depression level which are internalization problems, where the poor adolescents showed higher level of anxiety and depression compared to the non-poor adolescents. There was no significant statistical difference in externalization problems. Third, the result of analysis on the influence of stress on internalization problems showed that economic and friends stress had an influence on the anxiety and depression of poor-adolescent group. However, the subtypes of stress that affect the internalization problems of non-poor adolescents were parents, friends, and appearance. Fourth, the result of analysis on the influence of stress on externalization problem showed that academic stress and economic stress had an influence on the externalization problem of poor adolescent group and for non-poor adolescent group, all subtypes of stress had influence on externalization problem. Taken together, the analysis result of this study revealed that the difference between poor and non-poor adolescents was not only shown in subtypes and the level of internalization problem but also in the subtypes with significant influence on internalization and externalization problems they experience. This result is meaningful in that it has approached the analysis in general without categorizing the adolescent group into sub-group and also in that it has revealed what used to be difficult when approached in the lump without categorizing stress or social-emotional problems into lower dimensions. The result of this study which aimed to promote in-depth understanding on the differences between adolescent groups suggest the need to inquire into the factors that affect according to the characteristic of the group and to have a differentiated intervention to prevent and resolve the internalization and externalization problem experienced by adolescents in the same period of development. Although this study has a theoretical and practical implication in the study on the stress of poor and non-poor adolescents and the problems of internalization and externalization, it has limitation in that it did not analyze the temporal trend of each group. In this regard, it also suggests proposals for further study. Keyword : Poverty, poor adolescent, stress, internalization, externalization
