Modern society shows a strong tendency toward experimentation and breaking beyond spatial and temporal boundaries. This tendency involves combining various formats in diverse areas through innovative thinking and communication. Fashion items are no exception, as they presents complicated shapes and meanings in their designs, and in this way they can become symbols open to reinterpretation. Consequently, by analyzing them we are able to understand the zeitgeist, the intent of the designs, and other influential variables to fashion designs in social and cultural context. In the light of the globalization of design elements derived from Korean styles, this study intends to analyze and interpret the work of fashion designer, Lie Sang Bong including the design concepts expressed in his fashion items, how he expresses his intentions, what the visual messages in his designs, how he expresses his intentions, what the visual messages in his designs are, and how the messages are applied to real life through social and cultural viewpoints. To do so, this paper suggests a new framework based on E. Panofsky’s iconology and C. W. Morris’ semiotics . The new framework is applied to the analysis and interpretation of Lie’s fashion items to clarify the intention and meaning of his designs in real life contexts. As part of the research methodology, this study uses photographs of Lie’s fashion collections, the reviews on his fashion collections, and records of his interviews or newspaper articles as the primary sources. The secondary sources include books and research papers written in and outside of Korea. Among the primary sources the introduction to his collections and articles about his interviews were collected from the designer’s official homepage (www. liesangbong.com), and the photographs from his fashion collections were selected by the designer himself as the best ones presenting his design themes and concepts. Five pieces from each season collection (twenty pictures in total) were collected for the study. In addition, the newspaper articles related to the social and cultural aspects of his designs in real life situations were collected from the website of Korea Press Foundation (www. mediagaon. or. kr.). The articles were from a period of two years, ranging from S/S Seoul Collection of 2013 to F/W Seoul Collection of 2014. The framework based on Panofsky’s iconology and Morris’s semiotics includes four steps of analyzing and interpreting fashion as symbols: a pre-iconographical and iconographical analysis step, an iconological analysis , and a social and cultural communication analysis. The results from analyzing Lie Sang Bong’s designs from his collections are as follows. Firstly, from a pre-iconographical analysis perspective, the properties of the appearance of his fashion items between 2013 S/S Seoul Collection and 2014 F/W Seoul Collection were analyzed. The colors used in his designs suggest the religious influence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Moreover, the concepts of yin-yang and the School of Five Elements, shamanism, and the symbolic role of beauty underlie his choice of colors as well. His lines and planes suggest the beauty of blank space and lines. The textures of the materials feature the beauty of reiteration. Secondly, from the perspective of iconographical analysis, the designer’s 2014 S/S Seoul Collection shows his experience of awe and wonder toward Yellowstone National Park. He interpreted this experience by adding a Korean sense of underlying consciousness about beauty and philosophy to his fashion designs. Another example of the iconography in his work is his 2014 S/S Seoul Collection’s adoption of the concept of the hibiscus, which is the Korean national flower. It symbolizes national unity, and historically it was also the symbol of the fight for Korean independence from Japanese rule. Lie transformed it into a modernized symbol of Korea. In the 2013 F/W Seoul Collection, he derived Korean imagery for his clothing from the pattern of wooden bars on the window frames of the hanok (the Korean traditional house), which clearly resonates with the Korean sensibility. Finally, another example is that his 2013 S/S Seoul Collection used butterflies as a concept in his designs. He converted the butterflies in his memory to Korean imagery through the process of decomposition and recreation in his imagination. Thirdly, in terms of iconological analysis, this paper discusses the intrinsic meaning embedded in Lie’s design pieces, using the same examples as above. His experience of being enlightened in Yellowstone drove him to express human harmony by highlighting human frailty and vanity before great natural beauty in opposition to inhumanity generated through materialism, confusion in values, and egoistic individualism. The Korean hibiscus he imposed in his designs projects the natural law and the spirit for Korean, symbolizing the unity of Korean people, and furthermore, the unity of humans as a whole, as well as the harmony between humans and nature. For the third example, the pattern of the wooden bars laid on the windows and doors of the hanok appeals to him as a symbol of communications between humans, between humans and nature, and between humans and materials, including their values as well. Finally, the butterflies in his designs are the ideal objects to represent achieving a free state of mind and pursuing the spiritual world. Finally, how the elements of shapes and lines implying Korean images and fundamental meanings are applied to real life through analyzing social and cultural communications. For example, designs for the Richensia apartment interior built by Kumho E & C and furniture designs by Cherish using traditional scenic drawings exemplify the adoption of Korean imagery to reflect naturalism in life and culture. Additionally, it is proven that he makes a move to realize the unity of the whole world in projects such as the Korean hibiscus logo for KOIKA, designs of Korean images using colors chosen from the flags of the third world, and his other volunteering projects. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Korea’s diplomatic relations with Switzerland and Austria, Lie staged the performing events using the theme of images of Korea in Zurich and Vienna along with fusion music, b-body dancers, and Pansory, the traditional Korean style of opera. Through this event it could be seen how the fashion trends of modern time, namely the breaking of boundaries and mixing of elements is applied to fashion via communications between various areas of art and diplomacy. Lie has indicated that now we are in a time of sensibility that does not value boundaries between different design areas, and fashion designers need to communicate not only through fashion, but also through diverse social and cultural channels. Another example of this philosophy is his other collaboration with the photographer, Nick Knight in Bangkok, which takes on the butterfly image that is symbolic of the Korean mood, enabling images of Korea to be unfolded worldwide and future-oriented values to be created through the association of butterfly pattern, fashion design, and artistic photography. As we have examined closely in this paper, the designer Lie Sang Bong has reinterpreted traditional images of Korea in the present era and applied them to fashion designs. His work clearly attests that Korean images can cross the boundaries of fashion and can make a profound impact in various fields. Accordingly, the variety of aesthetics and values which Korean images generate should be reinterpreted and be applied to real life contexts through our unremitting attention and care.
Modern society shows a strong tendency toward experimentation and breaking beyond spatial and temporal boundaries.
