The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of family cohesion and family adaptability on elementary school students’ suicidal ideation and to identify the mediation effect of resilience. A total of 424 5th and 6th grade students from 3 elementary schools located in Seoul and Daegu participated in the study. Main results of this study are as follows. First, there were significant correlations among family cohesion, family adaptability, and suicidal ideation. Second, resilience partially mediated the effect of family cohesion on suicide ideation. As family cohesion increased, resilience also increased, and this led to decrease in suicidal ideation. Third, resilience also partially mediated the effect of family adaptability on suicidal ideation. The results of this study show that family cohesion and adaptability are both meaningful predictors of suicidal ideation in elementary school students and that resilience is a crucial factor mediating the relations between family function and suicide ideation. This study suggests that increasing resilience is critical to prevent suicidal ideation of elementary school students. In conclusion, enhanced resilience is expected to protect the children in vulnerable family circumstances from suicide ideation.
