In order to increase the poor impact strength and low elongation at break of poly(L-lactic acid)(PLA), PLA/polycarbonate(PC) blend films were prepared by melt-blending of PLA and poly(bisphenol A carbonate). PLA/PC/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and PLA/PC/triacetin (TA) blend films with various amount of PBAT or TA were also prepared, expecting PBAT and TA would be acted as compatibilizers for PLA/PC blends. Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of the blend films were analyzed by using UTM, impact strength tester, SEM, DSC, and DMA. Results showed that there was no miscibility between PLA and PC polymers. The crystallization of PLA in PLA/PC blends became difficult and the PLA crystals formed were imperfect. Although both PBAT and TA affected the crystallization of PLA in PLA(70)/PC(30) blends, the former retarded and the latter accelerated it during the heating process. The tensile breaking stress of PLA/PC films decreased as the PC content in the blend films increased, while the elongation at break and impact strength of the PLA/PC blend films were not enhanced. Both the elongation at break and impact strength of PLA(70)/PC(30)/PBAT films increased slightly with increasing PBAT content in the blend films. PBAT endowed partial compatibility for PLA/PC/PBAT blend. In case of PLA(70)/PC(30)/TA blend films, both elongation at break and impact strength of PLA(70)/PC(30)/TA films increased dramatically with increasing TA content in the blend films without decreasing tensile breaking stress. TA acted as an excellent compatibilizer between PLA and PC polymers, and enhanced the mechanical properties of the PLA/PC/TA blend films.
