Cellulose has attracted lots of interests as potential reinforcements in green polymer composites. However, due to hydrophilicity of cellulose, interfacial bonding and dispersibility of cellulose in a hydrophobic polymer matrix is poor. Therefore, in this study, two methods were applied respectively to improve interfacial bonding and dispersibility of cellulose powder in a polypropylene (PP) matrix.
The first method was adding a compatibilizer, maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MAPP). PP/cellulose composites with MAPP were prepared by melt-blending followed by compression molding. Mechanical properties of the PP/cellulose composites were investigated by UTM and izod impact tester. Thermal properties of the PP/cellulose composites were investigated by TGA and DSC. SEM images for the fracture surfaces of the composites showed that the MAPP was effective in improving PP/cellulose interfacial bonding. Tensile strength and modulus of the composite were maxima when MAPP content, based on cellulose content, was 3 wt.%. With increasing cellulose content, impact strength of the composites decreased but tensile strength and modulus increased. Furthermore, the water absorption and thickness swelling of the composites increased.
The second method was modification of cellulose powder by using soybean oil for surface hydrophobization. After dispersing cellulose powder in a soybean oil/ethanol solution, the solution was partly dried and then reacted in an oven at over 110 ℃. FTIR spectroscopy and wettability test were used to confirm the hydrophobization of cellulose powder. Hygroscopicity of original and hydrophobized cellulose (H-cellulose) powder was measured by TGA. With increasing attached soybean oil content in H-cellulose, hygroscopicity of H-cellulose decreased. Mechanical properties of PP/H-cellulose composites were investigated by UTM and izod impact tester. Impact strength and elongation at break of the PP/H-cellulose composite increased with increasing attached soybean oil content in H-cellulose. The PP/H-cellulose (80/20) composite with H-cellulose of 29.6 wt.% soybean oil composition showed a maximum tensile strength and modulus. It was confirmed by SEM image analysis of the fracture surfaces that the PP/H-cellulose composite had stronger interfacial bonding between the PP matrix and cellulose powder compared to the PP/cellulose composite.
