In this paper, a method of walking stably on rough terrain is proposed for a quadruped robot which consists of a hydraulic actuator that uses an electrical servo valve. First, a mechanical stiffness switch (MSS) structure inspired by the leg structure of a horse was proposed to maintain appropriate rigidity when the feet are stepping on the ground. This structure also absorbs the shock produced when the feet contact the ground surface. In addition, a position-based balance controller was designed to maintain the pose using the tilting information of the body obtained through the sensor of the inertia measurement unit (IMU). It was shown that the robot walked stably on irregular road surfaces and during disturbances, as well as on inclined slopes. Quadruped robots usually use a trot gait whereby their diagonal feet move together instead of using a static gait where the feet move sequentially one at a time. When the floor surface is uneven, the pose becomes unstable because of the dynamic force. To prevent this, the foot must step on an appropriate place according to the pose information. The shock produced when touch-down must be absorbed, and the force of the stepping foot must be properly maintained. These characteristics are implemented mainly through force control at the each joint and toes. It is difficult to apply hydraulic force control technology, which is used in a single-axis joint or modeled tester among hydraulic systems, to a walking robot, which consists of multiple joints and makes continuous contact. Unlike an electric motor, a hydraulic actuator controlled by a servo valve is a speed source. When the input is “0,” in theory it has infinite stiffness. In addition, the output torque is nonlinear, because the joint mechanism converts the linear motion of the actuator to a rotational motion. Because of the gaps and bending produced during fabrication, the signals from the force sensor are degraded. For the force sensor of the toe, the hysteresis characteristic becomes worse owing to the impact that occurs when the toe lands on the ground, and the resolution decreases because of the broad measurement range. Therefore, when considering how to improve the design, the size and weight of the force sensor are not suitable for a walking robot. For this reason, a control method for walking on rough terrain is necessary on the basis of the position control of the hydraulic actuator. This control method can be implemented rather easily. First, a method of varying the stiffness of the leg was inspired by the front leg structure of a horse. When the motion of the distal joint corresponding to the ankle of the fore leg of a horse is modeled primarily with two springs, at least 50% of the total angle moves within the initial 10% of the stance phase, and the change of force caught at the tip of the foot also shows a nonlinear characteristic. This is caused by a complex structure consisting of at least three bones and at least three tendons, and it can be analyzed based on the stiffness changes according to its state. Using this information, a two-stage stiffness mechanism was designed in which a spring of low stiffness is operated at the initial contact (10%) during the stance phase, and a mechanical switch operates a spring of high stiffness to support the foot afterward. In addition, by designing a leg trajectory compensator to improve the performance of the mechanism, the robot adapts well to an uneven terrain or inclined plane. The poses of the robot become unstable when the actual force acts as an external force when the center of gravity is skewed to one side because of intentional kicking. This is shown in the video of BigDog of a load being leaned toward one side. When walking on uneven terrain, a body leans to one side when the heights of the front and rear feet become different and the stepping foot slips. Although the circumstances are different, because the output trends of the IMU sensor in these cases are similar, various methods have been proposed for a controller to maintain a stable pose on the basis of this data. However, most of these controllers were based on a torque control. In this paper, a balance controller suitable for providing position control of the joint was designed. First, a controller for the stance leg was configured by using the current orientation of the body, the linear speed of the previous step, and the difference between the center of the foot and the center of the body. A controller for the swinging leg was configured by combining the orientation of the body and the linear speed of the body during the current step. In addition, by examining the difference in length between the front and rear legs along the z-axis and the slope of the body in the trajectory of the foot, a controller that can adapt to inclined planes was included. Using a hydraulic quadruped robot named “JINPOONG,” an experiment was carried out for walking on uneven terrain such as gravel, snow, and grass; walking up and down an inclined plane of 15 degree; and having a 70-kg person ridded this experiment, it was shown that the quadruped robot could maintain a stable walking on rough terrain when the proposed method was applied. When the proposed method is applied to the quadruped robot, a joint can be designed on the position controller. This can be implemented more easily than a force control that requires a complex and expensive system. Using only the IMU sensor and ground-surface-contact information, poses can be maintained during disturbances and on rough terrain such as uneven ground and inclined planes. It is expected that the MSS mechanism can be used when an actuator with very high stiffness, such as a hydraulic actuator, must have two-stage variable stiffness in an environment where contact occurs. In the future, hydraulic actuators that can exert a large force will be widely used to control dynamic walk and objects of heavy weight. From this perspective, a solution is necessary for contact dynamics. Therefore, an experiment was implemented using a special hydraulic circuit that included parts for a walking robot. This study was carried out using a mechanism for smooth and fast motion: a new type of light and flexible hydraulic actuator that is not used for construction machines or industrial purposes. To improve gait performance, is necessary to study a dynamics model of robot and environmental model. By doing this, a more intelligent walking can be facilitated. First, using a bio-mimetic sensor system for the walking, a study is required to recognize the physical and spatial environments that affect the body.
