UL(Underwriters Laboratories lnc.)

The purpose of this study is to review the installation of differential heat detectors and to help building designers use them in their design work. Data gathered from January to April of 2014 shows that in South Korea the number of building fires totaled 956. Of these 956, just 612 (64.0%) occurred where there were automatic fire detection systems, with 321(33.6%) fires taking place in buildings not equipped with such systems and Twenty-three(2.4%) fires occurred in unknown operating cases. In a space that is large and with fire detectors, if the sprinklers fail to activate, the result is the loss of property. But if the fire detectors fail to work, the result is casualty. The aspects of casualty and property loss differ according to the characteristics of the building usage and building size. In South Korea, designs for fire safety through building codes is simple and uniform, so it can be unreasonable for buildings designed for other purposes and different functions. The present paper reviews fire safety designs according to the function of a building. In reviewing the validity of the detectors, we compared the testing methods of detectors based on the Korean Standard and the US Standard, such as UL. The Korean standard shows that the detectors should be installed the same distance from each other in vertical shafts such as stairwells and elevators. But in common spaces, the standard specifies not the same distance but the number of detectors. That means in arbitrary places some detectors can be densely distributed. In other words, some places that really need detectors cannot be equipped with them. If the installation of the detector is exposed directly to the flame, the detection time is fast and reliable. The characteristic variables of the detectors are fire load of fire compartment and the height of the room. The detection time of the UL standard is determined by the heat release rate and the response time index(Response Time Index : RTI). The distance detection period can be calculated by an empirical formula that takes into account ceiling height and the fire load. Though two buildings may take up the same area, if the width and the length are different, the number of the installed detectors will also be different. To achieve the optimum number of installed detectors, we calculated the time and temperature using an empirical formula that UL and FMRC made together. We performed Fire Dynamic Simulations(FDS) to compare the result of the formula between Korea’s building code and NFPA’s. As the input data we used the present fundamental verified data. According to the space determined in our study, if we employ FDS calculations, we are able to obtain temperature distributions within the space according to time. The results are very similar to those of the empirical formula. One of the results in this study is that it is important to install a detectors at equal distances, like a radar system. Because the temperature distributions according to For each model of the time are different as the detector locations varies. The results from this study can be used in detector design and installation. The author hope that in the future, Korea’s fire safety building code will be enhanced so as to ensure alarm alert people to outbreaks of fire while saving human life and minimizing property loss.
