This study aims to investigate the perceptions of students participating in mathematics exhibitions by directly designing and operating mathematics exhibitions and, based on this, to provide more effective methods for operating mathematics exhibitions.
Recently, students regard mathematics only as a difficult subject and gradually lose interest in mathematics. Therefore, there is a need for experience classes capable of arousing the curiosity of students attracting the interest or mathematics exhibitions capable of providing various experiences at a time.
The author conducted experience classes related to mathematics units in the curriculum and then, based on the program, held the Gyeongnam Mathematics Exhibit on August 30 and 31, 2014. Research schools operated 43 out of a total of 60 booths, and the exhibit attracted approximately 6000 participants. In order to investigate the effect of the mathematics exhibit, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 421 students who participated in the Gyeongnam Mathematics Exhibit and responded to the questionnaire. Their general perception of the exhibition, mathematical knowledge, and attitudes and interest in mathematics were analyzed in the questionnaire. Among them, a total of 154 students who directly operated booths consisted of 121 middle school students and 33 high school students. In addition, a total of 267 students who participated only in the exhibit consisted of 101 middle school students and 166 high school students.
In general perception research on mathematics exhibitions, more than 93 percent of the middle and high school students showed very positive reactions that the mathematics exhibition was interesting despite the fact that students have difficulty in mathematics. Particularly in the mathematical knowledge and attitudes toward mathematics, the students who operated the booths were more positive than the other students who only participated in it and mentioned that it was extremely beneficial and challenging. In the mathematical interest, the students who only participated in it showed more positive responses than the other students who operated the booths. The students mainly preferred programs to prove what they learned in class or mathematical formulas in new ways or to create what was needed for everyday living using mathematical principles. Compared to the high school students, the middle school students preferred activities with their friends such as board games. On the other hand, the high school students preferred programs to explain mathematical formulas or principles.
Therefore, in order to operate effective mathematics exhibitions, there is a need to conduct experience classes firstly by developing programs related to each unit of mathematics. If teachers create exhibits with students in mathematics clubs based on thorough research on mathematical experiences and provide education on booth operation with a focus on these students, it will enable students to experience many more things and teachers to reduce their burden of mathematics exhibitions. When diversifying programs through the participation of other schools with a focus on programs used for regular classes, it will not difficult to hold mathematics exhibitions. Mathematics experience activities got students who hated or had anxiety about mathematics interested in mathematics. It is expected that mathematics experience activities will help students develop not only the ability to solve problems but also the ability to think creatively when students realize mathematical principles and laws through mathematics experience activities.
