The purposes of the study is to develop an Early Childhood Self- Regulation Rating Scale. Toward this end the following research questions are addressed: Subject 1. What are the components of an Early Childhood Self- Regulation Rating Scale? Subject 2. What is the validation process of the Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale measurement instrument? 2-1. What is the reliability of the Early Childhood Self-Regu- lation Rating Scale? 2-2. What is the validity of the Early Childhood Self-Regula- tion Rating Scale? To develop the Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale, I analyzed a literature review, observations of young children, and responses from a teacher questionnaire. Through this, 117 preliminary items were extracted, from which 27 items were selected following cross-correlation analysis and content validation. The instrument was tested on 653 young children (aged 4 and 5 years) at 10 preschools and daycare centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province in Korea. The young children were directly involved in the test, in which a teacher administered a questionnaire to a child in a structured one-on-one personal interview. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0, with the following results. First, to compose the Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale, I performed cross-correlation and exploratory factor analysis between the items. In this way, I extracted three factors, including forbearance (14 items), waiting (6 items), and compliance (7 items), making a total of 27 items. To determine the standard for the Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale, I analyzed selected groups and raw scores by quartile. Based on interquartile range, the Q4 group that scored over 75% was set as the upper quartile for forbearance, with raw scores of 107-108. The Q2 and Q3 groups, 2/4 and 3/4 were set as the median quartiles for forbearance, scoring around 25%-75% of the interquartile range with raw scores of 98-106. The Q1 group, 1/4, scoring under 25% of the interquartile range, was set as the training group for forbearance, with raw scores of 47-97. Second, to verify the Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale, I calculated the Cronbach’s alpha to determine the internal consistency. A Cronbach’s alpha value of .93 was obtained, demonstrating a high level of internal consistency between the 27 items. This measure of reliability indicates that the instrument is capable of consistently measuring forbearance in young children. Third, to verify the Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale, I performed confirmatory factor analysis and analyzed correlations between items. The analysis resulted in scores of over .9 in assessment of model fit (CMIN, NFI, RFI, IFI, TLI CFI) and under .05 on RMRSEA, indicating that the tool fulfills its purpose. In conclusion, this Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale was designed to reflect existing theories of self-regulation, as well as needs and conditions in early childhood learning environments. The instrument was found to be both reliable and valid. Therefore, the results suggest that the Early Childhood Self-Regulation Rating Scale can be useful to early childhood educators in the field as a resource for identifying and understanding self-regulating behavior in young children, as well as a tool for guiding young children in a more desirable direction in terms of self-regulation.
