It is not too much to say that the 21st century is the century for culture and art. many countries in the world are supporting the cultural industry at the national level, and businesses are also investing in various cultural activities. In addition, expectations from the audiences of museums in modern times are growing as the patterns of cultural consumption are also changing. In this regard, art museums need to put more efforts in accommodating their future demands. New art museums are being established today and they are holding a number of exhibitions every year. As the number of visitors to the art museums is increasing, it is essential for art museums to provide more pleasant and comfortable settings for the audiences and so many exhibition space are audience-oriented, focusing on achieving competitive edge and maximizing their values. Therefore, it is necessary to examine internal environment of the art museums. Despite the fact that servicescape may possibly have much implications on the marketing management through various empirical analysis, it is now limited to museums and convention exhibitions and empirical researches on the servicescape for art museums are not being conducted enough. In this regard, this research aims to identify physical environmental features of exhibition space for art museums and establish a theoretical model on the effects of these features on the audience satisfaction and behavior. Also, it seeks to make suggestions on the service for exhibition environment or marketing activities through empirical analysis. To this end, this research carried out document researches to establish related theories to the research, and designed a research model to conduct empirical analysis. The survey for this research was conducted for one week from May 11 to 18, 2015 at the recently opened ‘National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Korea’ in Seoul and a private museum ‘Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art.’ The questionnaires were distributed for 150 visitors to the art museums for each day of the survey period, and a total of 300 questionnaires were returned. Excluding those considered meaningless due to a small number of answered questions, a total of 281 samples were used for empirical analysis. The empirical analysis was conducted through SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. The results showed that each element of physical environment of the art museums has significant effects on the audience satisfaction and satisfaction of visitors also has meaningful effects on some of their behavior intentions, especially to revisit the art museums and recommend to others. The most powerful factor of physical environment of the art museums affecting the satisfaction of the audiences was human factor followed by surrounding factor, convenience, presentation factor, and facility attractiveness. Reflecting on the research results, it can be inferred that the art museums can draw more audiences by reinforcing the strengths in kindness and hospitality from the staff, internal temperature and noisiness, and lighting, and also by mending the holes in interiors, booth design, symbolic objects ad sculptures. As above, this research conducted empirical researches on the effects of physical environment of art museums on the audience satisfaction and behavior to provide guidelines for establishing strategic management schemes of museum space that provide more convenient and pleasant environment. Also, this research aims to suggest development directions for museums to provide quality service and environment, turning them into comfortable space that communicate with the audience.
