The objective of this study is to instill a greater consciousness of safety in those pursuing mountaineering. In order to achieve this objective, mountaineering accidents and relevant reports were scrutinized to look for insights as well as precautionary measures which can be applied to improve mountaineering safety. For the subject of the research, 80 mountaineers who partake in trekking and/or high altitude mountaineering were selected through convenience sampling. Contact was initiated via phone call which was then followed up by email, culminating in a face to face interview at the subject’s place of work. The data collected was analyzed using constant comparative method as well as inductive categorization. The raw interview data, which had variances due to each subject’s choice of terminology as well as way of speaking, was initially cleansed to those which were relevant to the subject of this study. The cleansed data was then categorized through an initial classification into various level 3 categories followed by subsequent classification into level 2 then level 1 categories. The analysis revealed the following. Mountaineering, sometimes in harmony with nature and sometimes despite nature, through the simple objective of ascending or summiting a mountain rewards the mountaineer with a sense of accomplishment. Further, by demanding team work, self-sacrifice, responsibility, willpower, and composure, mountaineering allows its participants to push beyond their physical and mental limitations like no other sport. However, despite the great rewards of mountaineering, the aftereffects of a mountaineering accident, especially as a result of carelessness and lack of alertness, can be serious and long-lasting no matter the objective (e.g., pure mountaineering, educational training, scientific exploration, etc…). Therefore, the prevention of unfortunate accidents in advance can be said to be the best condition or method to pursue mountaineering. With objectives such as summiting Mount Everest, mountaineering, which takes place within the forces of nature, is an aggressive and challenging pursuit and with the ever changing seasons, weather, and nature in general, does inherently have a certain degree of danger requiring the utmost level of preparation, even for those with impressive experiences and high level of high altitude climbing skills, the failure of which can readily lead to accidents. No mountaineer wishes for an accident, but should an incident occur, the cause and prevention measure should be analyzed and be applied to future pursuits. The team leader must go through a thorough preparation process to ensure the prevention of accidents and in case an accident does occur, must exercise quick and accurate judgement as mountain rescue teams typically take a long time to arrive at the scene. In conclusion, mountaineers must ready themselves to correctly react to emergency situations through continuous education and training in both climbing skills and emergency medical skills.
