Owing to many architectural advantages, CBFs(Concentrically Braced Frames) with braces arranged in an inverted V-pattern are frequently used. Inverted V-braced frames require special considerations that are not required for other CBF configurations. During severe earthquakes, brace buckling occur and this in the inverted V-braced frames induces the vertical unbalanced forces which, in turn, impose the additional beam moments. Therefore, the beams in the braced bay should be designed with sufficient strength such that beam hinging should be precluded. Current design criteria prescribe that the vertical unbalanced force for design should be computed by load combinations including 30 percent of initial compressive strength and full yielding tensile strength of braces. The braces in CBFs should dissipation seismic energy through cyclic tension yielding and compression buckling. For this behavior, braces should have flexible end condition at each end by allowing the gusset plate to develop restraint-free plastic rotations. This requires that the free length(clearance distance) between the end of the brace and the assumed line of restraint for the gusset plate be sufficiently long to permit plastic rotation, yet short enough to preclude the occurrence of gusset plate plate buckling prior to member buckling. In the current design criteria, a length of two times the plate thickness(2tp linear clearance) is recommended. In this study, in order to evaluate seismic performance of connection design method(2tp linear clearance and 8tp elliptical clearance) and investigate vertical unbalanced force as beam section change, a comprehensive series of nonlinear FE(Finite Element) analyses were performed. The analytical results showed that current calculation formula concerning vertical unbalanced force was conservative and FE models using 8tp elliptical offset provided superior seismic performance than models using 2tp linear offset throughout the FE analysis. In conclusion, this study presents that current design criteria of vertical unbalanced force and clearance distance should be reconsidered and improved.
