Today, almost everyone visits stores and shops at least once a day and markets are now indispensable thing in human life. Especially hypermarkets are rapidly growing in Korea ever since E-mart, one of the hypermarkets, was opened in 1993. It became more popular and nationwide now than department stores, shopping centers, boutiques or any other shopping complexes. The number of hypermarkets is over 500 as of today and many more are expected to be open. Domestic hypermarkets were able to successfully grow under specific market conditions – companies’ pricing competition, change of consumers’ lifestyle and innovations in distribution information technology. We can find some reasons of the success of the hypermarkets. There have been intensifying competitions among leading department store brands, constant economic recessions and financial crisis. Customers needed to be smarter to go through these difficulties and became more practical on spending. They seek for quality goods with a lower price and hypermarkets satisfy their needs and turned out to be a favourable place to shop. In recently amended Article 2 of the Distribution Industry Development Law, we are able to find the definition of a Hypermarket as a kind of large scale stores. A large scale store is a year-round store with size of 3,000 square meters or larger. It includes hypermarkets, boutiques, department stores, shopping centers, shopping complexes, etc. Hypermarkets mainly sell groceries and household items and free customers to shop without staff’s help. Leading companies in the field are E-mart, Lotte mart, HomePlus, Hanaro mart, Eland retail and so on. Hypermarkets are continuously putting more attention on mutual communication with consumers to meet their needs and expectation and pictograms are used as one of the means. Pictogram is a type of communication and visual language in the sense of conveying meanings to many and unspecified people. As they are as simple and clear as enough to make people grasp its meaning at a glance and also it’s feature applies to everyone who sees them regardless of cultural and ethnic differences, so they plays a big role in many large scale stores. In the thesis, hypermarket’s activities on delivering visual information and consumer’s reactions together are defined as “Signification” and if the “Signification” occurs with using pictograms can be called “Communication.” The whole interaction of ‘signification’ and ‘communication’ is “Semiosis.” When there are active interactions in a hypermarket, it will affect customers’ satisfaction of using hypermarkets and eventually change their spending patterns. Charles Sanders Peirce, who first developed a theory of Signs, stated in his paper that signs consist of three inter-related parts: a sign, its object and its interpretant and relationships among the three typologies yield 9 classes of sign. Main purposes of this research are to find pictograms’ traits and functions used in hypermarkets, to structure their connections based on Peirce’s Semiosis approach and to design and propose optimized pictograms which suits for stores like hypermarkets.
