Silicon is one of promising anode materials for lithium ion rechargeable batteries. It has a high theoretical specific energy capacity compared to current commercial graphite anode material. However, the large volume expansion over 300% of silicon during lithiation/delithiation processes limits its wide applications including electric vehicles and energy storage system. The enormous volume expansion leads to the internal cracks of silicon particles so it results in pulverization and large reversible capacity loss because of the formation of solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layers. Several works has reported that the loss of reversible capacity can be eliminated by the reduction of silicon particles. In this study, the effect of morphology of silicon and silicides phase on the cycling properties of Si-RE and Si-Fe binary alloys was investigated. The alloy powders were prepared by melt spinning process, one of the most efficient rapid solidification processes. The obtained ribbons were fragmented to produce powder under 25 μm using the ball milling for 48 hours. To examine the electrochemical characteristics, the powders were mixed with conductive materials, polyamide-imide binder (PAI) dissolved in deionized water. 1.5M LiPF6 melted ED/DEC/FEC was used as an electrolyte. The cell tests were carried out using galvanostatic method in the potential range of 0.01 − 1.5V (vs. Li/Li+) at varying C-rates. The microstructure and phase analysis were conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results showed that the microstructures of the melt-spun ribbons consisted of silicon with (CexLa1-x)Si2 and FeSi2 intermetallic compounds. The sizes of silicon particles in Si-RE and Si-Fe ribbons were ~90 nm and ~8μm, respectively. The cycle performance was improved by the formation of (CexLa1-x)Si2 phase at the Si83RE17 phase. The ultrafine morphology of silicon and reinforcing phases resulted in large energy capacity and good cycling performance.
