ABSTRACT
The Relationships among Parenting Attitudes, Peer Attachment, Ego-Resiliency, Stress-Coping Strategies and Smartphone Addiction
Lee, Young Hee Major in Counseling Psychology Education Graduate School of Education Korea University
The purpose of this study is two-folds: One is to investigate relationships among Korean youth’s perceived parenting attitudes, peer attachment, ego-resiliency, stress-coping strategies and smartphone addiction. The other is to identify the mediating effects of individual’s ego-resiliency and stress coping on relationship between parenting attitudes and peer attachment and smartphone addiction. Major statistic methods to analyze the collective data were T-test, Pearson`s correlation analysis, one-way ANOVA and Hierarchical regression analysis. The questionnaires were administered to 499 middle school students. The results were as follows. First, positive correlations were found among affective parenting attitude, peer attachment, ego-resiliency, and active stress-coping. Second, a correlation between parenting attitudes and peer attachment and smartphone addiction was significant. Specifically, parents` overprotective and rejective attitudes correlated positively, but affective attitude and peer attachment correlated negatively with smartphone addiction. Third, ego-resiliency and active stress-coping correlated negatively with smartphone addiction. Lastly, ego-resiliency and active stress-coping partially mediated the effect of affective parenting attitude on smartphone addiction. Ego-resiliency and active stress-coping also partially mediated the link of peer attachment and smartphone addiction. Based on these findings, the effects of parenting attitudes and peer attachment on Korean youth’s smartphone use were discussed. Especially, interacting with these effects, one’s ego-resiliency and active stress-coping were able to predict Korean youth’s smartphone addiction.
