The purpose of this study is to understand information behavior of older adults with diabetes for whom education and information use is important for self-management. After reviewing previous studies on the older adults’information behavior and health information behavior, and diabeticpatients’information behavior and extracted information behavior factors. A questionnaire was devised, and the structured interview was administered from Sep. 15thto Oct.8th2015 to 543 diabeticpatients aged 60 and over in the B hospital. It was to investigate awareness of diseases, health literacy, awareness of diabetes knowledge, information environment, information needs, willingness to information seeking, information use, information service requested, and personal background, andanalyzed descriptive statistics and relationship between factors. Also, the study was to identify the factors affecting information needs and use among older adults with diabetes through hypotheses testing. The main results are as follows. First, the older adults with diabetes are aware that diabetes is a serious disease that harms their health. However, they have relatively lower level of awareness about the importance of self-management, information acquisition and education, and this led to their absence from diabetes education.Result of the hypotheses testing shows awareness of diseases as a factor that affects information needs and use. Second, most ofrespondents have problem in understanding and accepting information materials and forms of the medical institution. Although they have the problem, because they rely highly on the information that hospitals provide, so that the hospital needs to improve information service. Also, result of the hypotheses testing shows health literacy as a factor that affects information use. Third, although the overall information needs are low, the older adults with diabeteshave quite high information needs in the context that is directly related to their own health, such as medical treatment, physical symptoms, and their health behaviors or habits. Also, in the early stage of disease, information needs about medical treatment, diet, and things forbidden are high. After 3 years ofsuffering disease, theyhave high information needs on complications. There were significant statistical differences between information needs, depending on the duration of the disease, education experience. Fourth, the older adults with diabetesuse TV, human information, the internet, information from the professional organization, the newspaper, the radio, and the book/magazine in the order named as health information source. And newspaper is the source the trust the least. There were significant statistical differences in information use, depending on information environment, duration of the disease, sex, education, education experience. Fifth, more than half of the respondentsdo not find the information, even though they need information. The most dominant reason was that because they do not know how to access to the information, the strategies were needed to bring them as a group of information users. Also, there were significant statistical differences in information needs and information use, depending on whether they have family or friends. It shows that communication through personal is major factor of information flow. Sixth, the older adults with diabetes have problem inunderstanding the printed contents. They prefer having information delivered directly, so they try to use human resource and the hospital as their first information source. Also, they needhealth seminar thatis held at the easily accessible place and the phone consultation. Seventh, use and awareness of information support facility is very low, and most of the respondents are not aware of diabetes registration & management system, a national program. And the major reason for not using library is that they do not feel to use or do not know the library service itself. Based on the results, campaign directed to raise awareness of the disease, marketing about information support facility, providing the customized information, developing a variety of information contents, information service through direct communications, designing media for older adults, and information-delivery system are suggested.
