Although tooth whitening is preferred in the modern society, there are concerns and controversies concerning the side effects of chemically synthesized bleaching agents. Thus, interest in natural tooth whitening has been mounting in recent years. However, hitherto, previous studies on tooth whitening have been focused largely on the whitening effects of chemically synthesized bleaching agents and their side effects while few studies have been performed to develop natural bleaching agents. This study thus aimed to explore the tooth whitening effects of the liquids of plum, grapefruit, and citron, all of which are indigenous to Korea, by dipping several extracted non-vital teeth into the liquids. Upper and lower premolars were used as the experimental teeth which were corrected and extracted due to their periodontitis within recent 6 months, but were healthy when seen with naked eyes; and a round plastic pipe with 38mm of diameter and 12mm of height was used to facilitate the formation of the molds of the test specimens; and to fix the extracted teeth, molding frames were filled with geosynthetic clay which is useful for mold forming. Liquids of citron, grapefruit, and plum were used as immersion solutions after being mixed with stilled water at the 1:1 ratio, and the extent of whitening was chronologically observed after a total of 54 test specimens were dipped into 6 kinds of immersion solutions (three specimen into each solution) for 3, 6, and 9 hours respectively. In addition, in order to watch changes in their masses before and after their whitening, the test specimens were dipped into the solutions following the measurement of their initial masses. A spectrophotometer was used to measure the values of L*, a*, and b*; and then the value of E * was calculated and then statistically processed in order to quantitatively determine the values of the whitening with the lapse of time. The masses of the specimens were measured and then statistically processed to observe changes in the masses after they were dipped. This study performed a component analysis to watch changes in the composition of the enamel surface before and after the dipping of the test specimens into the liquids of citron grapefruit, and plum. The results of the experiment are as follows: First, all of the specimens showed changes in their colors with the lapse of time, and the value of E* of the undiluted liquid of citron increased the whitening effects, and that of the citron liquid mixed with stilled water at the 1:1 ratio showed the highest degree of whitening effects in a 3-hour-long dipping. (P<0.05). The value of E* of the undiluted liquid of grapefruit increased the whitening effects with the lapse of time, and that of the grapefruit liquid mixed stilled water at the 1:1 ratio had the largest amount of whitening effects in a 6-hour-long dipping. (P<0.05). The value of E* of the liquid mixture of undiluted liquid, ordinary liquid of the plum, and distilled water at the 1:1 ratio showed the largest amount of whitening effects in a 6-hour-long dipping. (P<0.05). Second, all of the test specimens showed changes in their pH values and differences in their masses before and after they were dipped. In addition, it was observed that though pH values increased in most of the fruit liquids, they insignificantly decreased in the undiluted solutions of the grapefruit and plum. The masses of the specimens dipped into the citron liquid decreased while those into the liquids of the grapefruit and plum did not changed, or increased with the lapse of time. (P<0.05). Third, changes in enamel surface were witnessed before and after the dipping of the test specimens into the solutions; and those into the citron liquid had a decreased proportion of P and Ca while those into the liquids of the grapefruit and plum had an irregularly increased or decreased proportion of them. The changes in the compositions of the test specimens were also shown to have been irregularly affected by those in their masses. In summary, tooth breaching using natural fruit liquids was revealed to be effective, but much care is thought to be necessary not to use it for too long a period of time; otherwise, P and Ca on the enamel surface may decrease their amounts; and thus tooth structure may be weakened.
