Recently, advanced driver assistance system applications based on numerous vehicle dynamic sensors and surround sensors are being applied to the passenger car to improve safety and convenience in driving. Since vehicle dynamic sensors such as wheel speed sensor (WSS), steering angle sensor (SAS), gravity sensor (GS), and yaw rate sensor (YRS) provide motion information for the dead reckoning, those sensors could be applied to vehicle positioning systems to overcome the limitations in GNSS-based positioning. In this study, the GNSS and on-board vehicle sensor based positioning system was developed and its performance was analyzed. In total, five types of mechanisms and algorithms were designed to ensure that the on-board vehicle sensors’ measurements were not duplicated. An extended Kalman filter was developed in a closed loop and loosely coupled mode. The performance of developed algorithms was verified based on the two kinematic test data which were obtained in various road environments including speed bumps, curves, and slopes. The results indicate that GNSS/WSS/YRS/SAS/GS positioning algorithm show the best performance among developed integration algorithms. In the case of analyzing the effect of GNSS measurements, more precise navigation solution was obtained when both GNSS position and velocity measurements were used compared to the case of only the GNSS position measurement update. In particular the performance of GNSS/WSS positioning algorithm showed significant improvement with GNSS position and velocity measurement update. When GNSS outage occurs for 30 seconds, it is possible to estimate the horizontal positions with meter-level of accuracy with GNSS and on-board vehicle positioning algorithms excluding GNSS/WSS integration. Also, it was found that there is no remarkable improvement in the performance of GNSS and on-board vehicle positioning despite the use of GNSS measurement with centimeter-level of precision. This indicates that the error of navigation solution and sensor could not be estimated using the precise GNSS measurement due to the imperfect relationship between state variables in a dynamic model. The proposed GNSS and on-board vehicle positioning algorithm could be an alternative solution to complement the limitation of GNSS positioning technique, without the use of the low-cost IMU. Due to the low accuracy of currently available vehicle sensors, however, GNSS and on-board vehicle sensor based positioning algorithm would be suitable for the automotive navigation system to estimate the position in GNSS outage. In the automotive field requiring more precise navigation solution, a tactical grade IMU should be applied to the vehicle positioning system, and on-board vehicle sensors would be only used to compensate the INS error.
