The total length of road tunnels amounts to approximately 1,220km as of 2014 and it is expected that it will increase more due to constuction of roads under the road expansion program with Social Overhead Capital (SOC) as the geographical nature of Korea, where approximately 70% of the land consists of mountainous areas. In the tunnel, vehicles that pass through it perpetually generate natural wind, of which the average speed is usually greater than 4m/s and is of good quality. It is considered that when a small wind power system specialized for low wind speed is applied to a road tunnel, it is possible to generate power stably, which would supplement the shortcomings of the general wind power system that generates power irregularly. As a result, the speed of the natural wind that occurs in the road tunnel was measured to estimate the volume being generated. This study's results are summarized as follows: First, research papers and academic literature were searched for regarding the wind power application using the natural wind in the road tunnel, but the effort was in vain. However, plenty of previous studies were available regarding the small wind power system, which may be applied to the wind power system in the road tunnel. Second, there were the raised pavement markers that utilized the natural wind in the road tunnel and the case of the small wind power system installed on the median barrier as well as various patented applications were identified. It is considered that the abundance of patented applications means that studies on the wind power system using the natural wind in the road tunnel and its commercialization would become more active in the future. Third, the speed of the natural wind in domestic road tunnels with vehicle traffic was measured and it was identified that an average of 4.0m/s or more was regularly available and it was considered to be good quality natural wind for the potential small wind power system based on low wind speed. Fourth, it was analyzed that the vertical axial wind power system was suitable for the wind power system using natural wind in the road tunnel since it created dead space far smaller than the horizontal axial wind power system in the form of the jet fan which is installed in the existing road tunnel, and thus it was more effective for the wind power system. Fifth, Cheonma Tunnel in Jeonju-Gwangyang Expressway was selected to review wind power generation using the natural wind in the road tunnel. It amounted to 153.6W per generator. The expected generation per hour was 23,961W when wind power generators were installed in the 50m interval and 11,981W for the 100m interval. The yearly total generation was analyzed 131.2MW for the 50m interval and 65.6MW for the 100m interval. Consequently, it was envisaged that this system could be used usefully if applied to the facilities required of relatively small power such as emergency lighting. Sixth, stable and good quality power generation potential was identified if the small wind power system using natural wind was applied in the road tunnel in which the speed of the natural wind is greater than 4m/s. This study was initiated to determine the potential of application of the wind power system using the natural wind generated from vehicular traffic in the road tunnel. By the study result, it was identified that it was possible to generate adequate quality power if small wind power generators were installed in the constant interval using the characteristics of the road tunnel which was low in height and in a longitudinal direction. However, the results of this study only identified the possibility of wind power generation using the natural wind in the road tunnel and its expected generation. It was concluded that further studies were required for the wind power generator type, the optimal installation interval, the efficiency maximization method and how to ensure commercialization in consideration of the initial investment cost.
