Recently, major smartphones are equipped with fingerprint recognition technology by default. In addition, there is increasing use of fingerprint recognition than in the past as mobile payment based on fingerprint recognition increasing. Also, accredited certificates are replaced by fingerprint recognition gradually. So the correct recognition rate has been required.
Existing fingerprint recognition algorithm primarily use feature named minutiae which are composed of Ending point and Bifurcation. Minutiae based algorithms achieve quite accurate recognition performance. But there are some difficult cases to match two fingerprint images by only using corresponding minutiae pairs. Additional features usage can improve the recognition performance.
In this study, focusing on the ridges which compose fingerprint images, ridge thickness and ridge contour information are used additionally for recognition. The gap between a ridge and a ridge in the fingerprint image in 500dpi which resolution is widely used is about 10 pixels. In this range, possible pixel variation cases can be defined in some restricted cases. These restricted pixel variation cases can be additionally used for minutiae based recognition to improve recognition performance.
Also verify superiority of this algorithm proposed in this paper, through recognition performance comparison with other texture based algorithms.
