This research was an experimental one, as an attempt to enhance the efficiency in advanced treatment of wastewater and reduce sludge through microbial agents on facilities treating foods and sewage. For analyzing attributes of microbial agents, the following was performed: analysis of morphologies for microbial agents, jar-tests to calculate injection amounts, facilities for food wastewater, measurement of return sludge through optical microscopes experiments of microorganism activity like OUR and BMP tests, generated gas amounts, and improving efficiencies in advanced treatments. For high-precision analysis, an experiment that culture microorganisms was carried out. It seems that they are somewhat different from those that usually exist in aeration tanks at sewage treatment plants. Results from OUR test that measures active microorganisms are revealed that the activation level of soil microorganisms used for the method based on microbial agents had better results than the activation level of microorganisms in typical sewage treatment plants. In conducting BMP tests, in the serum bottle which recycled sludge was injected, an increase in amounts of gas generated was observed. For analysis on methane contents and generated methane amounts, injecting microbial agents led to an increase in growth rate of microorganisms, resulting in high digestion rates, relative to the control group. And analyzing the treated actual amounts of food waste and generated gases from the facilities used as the field study revealed increases in the treated amounts and generated gases. The experiment on advanced treatment of food wastewater due to microbial agents revealed that the process relying on the microbial agents had an enhanced removal rate relative to that of the existing MLE method. And the analysis on basic parameters that evaluate the water quality showed significantly high removal rates across all the parameters. In the experiment on improving the efficiency in sewage treatment plants COD removal rates were similar between the experiment and control and some results exhibited higher removal rate than control process at T-N treatment with effective T-P treatment. As for the sludge generation, when microbial agents were used, the residual amount of sludge decreased for an effect in reducing sludge. It was deemed that injecting microbial agents increased activation of microorganisms has led to an increase in the overall reaction of advanced treatment through removing organic materials due to viable fraction and a partial increase in denitrified microorganisms and phosphorous removing microorganisms. It was confirmed that the process with microbial agents, relative to the existing advanced treatment methods, exhibited higher efficiencies in treating organic materials, nitrogen, and phosphorous. Based on this study, comparison of design factors with similar methods was performed to standardize and optimize the design factors instead of simple comparisons in efficiencies, and the optimal design factors including the final alternative process, as well as SRT and F/M ratio, was proposed. In order to confirm generality of the mechanism and improvements in treatment performance of microbial agents as confirmed at food waste treatment facilities, the performance improvements for advanced treatments and reductions in sludge were analyzed at real sewage treatment plants. As this was confirmed, it could also be confirmed that it would be possible to make adjustments in a diverse range of wastewater concentrations and environment conditions. Microbial agents, relative to the general activated sludge , have advantages in high removal efficiencies, sludge reduction, and odor control, among others. This means that due to injection of microbial agents, soil microorganisms become dominant so that the microorganisms that make contributions to the treatment overall become a healthy and mixed microorganism cluster.
